Bonnet release cable snapped...

Yep, engine back in, out for preliminary test-drive, go to look at levels, snap!!!

So I'm sure I'm not the first person to come across this problem on a 944, but what is the easiest non-destructive method of now opening the bonnet? Any ideas?

Three suggs. Take out the near side head light, shroud and all and see if you can reach in with a hook to latch onto the nipple where the cable attatches; well I say near side, check you other Porks to see if that is a feasible solution and which is the best side to approach from.

Take off the undertray and see if you can reach the latch with a broom handle with the screwdriver blade from the tool kit inserted into a suitabe sized hole in a shortened broomstick. reinforce the shaft with cable ties or Jubs. The problem of snapped cables has been overcome before so it is a niggle but do-able.

If your cold air inlet is in the N/S wing take off the wheel, push the plastic fitting out of the wing and see if you can reacg in from there/
There is no fourth thing.

Thanks John,

Just been out with a bamboo cane and with the headlights up you can almost get to push the lever from the offside... but not quite!

Worst method I ever saw was on an early car - my first Porsche in fact (and one of the reasons I could afford it), where the nose panel had been cut, to of course totally fail to get to the bonnet release catch - at least cutting the bonnet would have been a bolt-on panel to replace...

On the 968 there's an emergency release cable hidden behind the nearside indicator and driving lamps - wonder if it's the same on your car (hope so!!).

Cut a big hole in the bonnet and bolt a big air scoop there to cover [:D]
Is this a bit extreme ??

Not much help, I know ! [:)]

In a sudden flash of inspiration... I thought it might not be the under-bonnet end that had snapped... well in fact, it turned out not to have snapped at all - I had jumped to that conclusion because pulling the handle suddenly went all very easy and didn't do anything. In actual fact it turns out to be the handle-housing in the footwell. I seem to recall some-one else had this problem and it wasn't that expensive to get a new part...

Many thanks for the suggestions...

I'll save the bonnet scoop option for next time... maybe the 968 fitting might be a good option to fit whilst I can get to it!

Very common - and its a part which is cheap from an OPC and frequently sold for 4x the price by Pork Chop and the like.

I didn't mention it because I didn't want to teach him to suck eggs... [:D]

Yep, I think it was Einstein that said "Two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity... and I'm not sure about the universe".

I haven't suffered it, but certainly come across it... off to the OPC I go... (I owe, I owe)

It will be well under a tenner for whichever new bit you need Tref. Mine went last month at the Bedford trackday:
