Blowing exhaust on 220 turbo.

Oops.. after 22 years of service the original exhaust on my 220T has started to blow, near a junction point quite far forward - about a foot or so behind the engine. I can probably patch it up for the moment, but I need to be on the look out for a new system (or second hand?).

Does anybody have any recommendations for replacement exhaust systems? I don't want anything too loud, or too expensive.

Are the Dansk Exhausts supposed to be very good quality - something like this as an example:

I've got the ESS one but it is only the back box and hooks upto the remainder of the stock system. It was about £350 when I bought it about 4 yrs ago (which isn't too bad for a stainless steel back box in my view) and it has been grea. It certainly isn't particularly loud and has a nice tone at higher RPM's. Recommended, but if your hole is further forward than the back box then it isn't going to help you much.

I have heard that the mid box on the turbo doesn't actually do that much and that if you remove it the noise level is not that much louder if at all. So if your hole is on that mid silencer secion then maybe remove it and replace with a straight through pipe and you might be sorted.

I also had the ESS mid pipe section, again very nice and no it doesn't make much if any difference to the noise. The only thing from memory was that the earlier turbos (maybe all 220's not sure) need a separate adapter plate for the ESS mid section pipe to fit properly.

.... more expensive than I'd anticipated!

However, the good news is that when I got it up in the air I discovered it was actually coming from the joint and the metal of the exhaust itself looks solid. In fact the joint had obviously been 'fixed' with sealant before. So I've applied some high temp gasket sealant, so hopefully that will sort it out for a while.

I would probably agree with the lack of functionality for the middle box on the turbo. Having been under the car whilst it's runing, mine rattles horribly at idle. Presumably all the baffling is now adding to noise rather than suppressing it! Still seems to pass noise regs at track days though.

cheers,
