Blocked roof drains

Hi

A bit of information from my recent experience of blocked roof drain destroyed my amplifier.

whilst my car was in the OPC for warranty work I noticed when I got it back i got a no sound available message on the PCM, after doing some checks I noticed the drivers carpets was soaking, the OPC replaced the amplifier as it happened when they had car. They also checked the drivers side drain plugs and said they were blocked, in normal circumstances i would have been left with a hefty bill.

After watching YouTube I checked the passenger side as the OPC didn’t and found these also blocked.

The drain plugs were cleaned a year ago durning its service and it’s garaged every night, can’t believe how blocked they were.

if you haven’t had them checked recently get them checked or better still do it yourself

I might be sceptical but I somehow get the impression that in many cases “cleaning” involves stuffing an airline down there and proclaiming it done. In the unlikely event that I didn’t pull them out and clean them myself I’d want photo evidence from the dealer of nice clean valves on my car.

Most specialists and many OPC recommend removing the rubber bungs at the bottom of the drains - they are essentially insect traps to stop nasty things crawling into the car in warmed climates than ours and have a limited additional function to help with the "wading" depth of the car.

Even with that done - its still worth checking them yourself regularly - even if done properly at a service thats 2 years - they can block in hours if the wrong debris goes down the wrong way
