Black and Silver Number plates

Personally I have been running black and silver number plates on my 1980 SC for a while now, never had any issues.
Will actually continue to do so as the text says ''To prevent any vehicle constructed after 1st January 1980 from the ability to display the black and silver number plates". My car was first registered in 1980 but actually built (therefore constructed) in 1979 as per the Porsche Certificate issued with the car so I should still be fine ??
Another one of these stupid rules IMHO but hey, these guys obviously need to justify their power !!!!

Franck, Sorry to bring an old thread back to life, and my knowledge can be well out of date, a bit like myself.. However as I remember it the plates changed to reflective type yellow/black & white /black around 1972 and vehicles after that time were not allowed to display old style number plates. There was the threat of a fine and if the reg number was "private" it could be confiscated...? Of course a lot of time has passed since then and rules & regs seem to change overnight.. With all the ANPR stuff around these days life is perhaps not as simple as it once was..?

My Early 911S was imported into UK in 1978 and was issued with the next number off the list by DVLA so was given a "P" suffix number and has had black and silver number plates ever since.
I once had a conversation with a clever MOT tester who thought the emissions were too high for a 1978 car but changed his mind when I pointed out the "Historic" part of the Tax disc for the 1973 car. Remember tax discs ?
I have never been stopped by UK Police for having black and silver number plates, which are read by the Dartford Crossing cameras!

Rules have changed with time and the latest is as follow (as Published on DVLA website 10/12/2020):

"Following the change in definition of a historic vehicle for vehicle tax exemption purposes in 2015, an issue was identified in the regulatory requirements for the valid display of a black and silver number plate. This resulted in an unintended consequence where any vehicle over 40 years old and registered in the historic tax class would be permitted to display an old style black and silver number plate. This was despite the law previously requiring all vehicles first registered after 1 January 1973 to only display the yellow and white number plates with black characters.
As this was never the intention, we have sought to rectify this through a legal correction which will shortly be implemented. The change seeks to prevent any vehicle constructed after 1 January 1980 from the ability to display the black and silver number plate despite being recorded in the DVLA’s historic tax class. Those vehicles with a construction date prior to 1 January 1980 will continue to be able to legally display black and silver number plates to avoid any undue costs of replacement."


So as long as your car is pre 1st January 1980 MANUFACTURED you can display Black and Silver old style plates.

Key part is that the car has to be 'REGISTERED' with DVLA as a historic. It is not good enough to know your car is over 40 years - it had to be registered by the owner on the DVLA website.

You are correct Peter, I should have clarified this, the car has to be registered in Historic class and pre 1st Jan 1980 manufactured.
What is not 100% clear is if this will be rolling over or not as far as the black and silver plates are converned (guessing not but no definite answers on this yet)
