I have a 1985 3.2 engine in my 1973 911, my ex hillclimb car, now retired to the road.
It is a fabulous car with a fab engine, 120K miles in, never been apart.
This engine works perfectly, smooth, hard acceleration, rock steady tick over at 800 rpm.
Cold and hot starting is perfect and so is 32 mpg on 99 E5 ESSO.
But....
One very long standing issue (since 1985 when the engine went in) has been a 'jerking' of the engine when 'just' coming off tick over to (say) steady acceleration. There is a small switch on the side of the throttle body (standard engine) which I think is the issue.
At a rock steady tick-over this switch is made and I think cuts some fuel off for emissions, and gently pressing the accelerator pedal and just breaking the switch contact the car can suddenly jerk and some makes for some transmission snatch. This is irritating!
Once past this point the throttle regulation of the engine is seamless. It has a standard Bosch DME.
Are all 3.2's like this?
If you are VERY smooth and careful you can get past this switching point seamlessly.
No switches/ wiring has been disturbed on the engine since 1995 when the engine had 60K miles on it.
I last removed the connectors on the engine when the drive train was last removed 5 years ago.
It does it every time without fail, as reliable as the engine is!
Any hints, tips, explanations welcome.
Graham.
