Belts change done !

So, my winter job this year was to change the belts and replace the front crank oil seal and oil pump drive. Later had been leaking for a while.

Anyhow, all back together and car running well. Random thing happened tonight though, I popped down to the local convenience store to get a couple of beers. As I arrived I noticed it was shut - started to turn the car and it stalled.

After pushing it across the road and attempting to start it repeatedly, I popped the bonnet - no clouds of smoke, oil, water or anything to note, apart from zero fuel pressure.

Tried starting it a few times, still no joy. Checked the fuel pump fuse all OK, still no FP. Thought flashed through my mind, DME relay ?

Swapped it out for the spare I keep, started immediately and giving 3bar fuel pressure. Random stuff !

Will check it tomorrow again and invest in another spare DME.

BTW, if anyone needs to borrow tools for belts change, tensioning and front crank oil seal, happy to lend them out.

yours

Chris

So, my winter job this year was to change the belts and replace the front crank oil seal and oil pump drive.

Does this mean that Spring can now start because I am getting hacked off with this cold weather []

Sorry to hear about your minor issue, let's hope it was just coincidence that the relay picked now to fail. They have to die some time and it's never convenient when they do so I renew mine every few years anyway

You changed the oil pump drive? I had thought about doing that aswell when i do my belts in the next couple of weeks but then thought it was probably overkill...are they know for giving problems with oil leaks etc

Also did you renew all tensioner/roller bolts and nuts or can they be re-used?

I have tried searching the forum many times but everytime i search something on here it never finds anything [&:]

I think Chris might have done the oil pump drive "while he was in there" because it is almost always neccesary to remove the crankshaft pulleys to fit the new belt. If it is anything like it looks in the pet drawing it appers that the oil pump drive is the part that rotates within the seal so while both pulleys are off it makes sense to renew both the crankshaft seal and drive at the same time. It is just about possible to wiggle the new belt through the narrow gap between the fixed guard and the edge of the pulley but great care and patience will be needed if damage to the belt is to be avoided, and would almost need tooth by tooth examination afterwards to check that the belt is intact. Compared to removing the crank pulley this is not a time saver.

I confess to not having been as thorough as Chris, so I am unfamiliar with this sub assembly.

In answer to the question "Did you change all the tensioner rollers and nuts/bolts ?"

No, I inspected all the relevant bits and decided that only the cam belt idler pulley needed changing. When I had the engine rebuilt ~ 10k miles ago, I changed a couple of the rollers, in particular one of the balance shaft pulleys.

Regarding the oil pump drive/sleeve - Clarks garage indicates that over a period of years/miles they develop a thin wear mark from running within the oil seal which can create a leak.

On inspection, the drive had this very slight wear mark - you could feel it with a finger nail.

I did struggle to refit the drive/ oil seal as outlined in a previous post - long story but the patent part I ordered wasnt as good a fit as the OPC part.

Although I never realised it at the time - but when I came to put it back together again.... John is correct, with the front pulleys in place, fitting the cam belt in between the pulley and the belt cover takes some doing !

Anyhow, I've now got 4 x new belts - without the over tension whine the old ones had and the peace of mind for the next 3yrs.

BTW, can anyone remind me of the mileage for retensioning the belts, 1500 miles ?

Chris

Hi Chris, I hope you are well?

From memory it's 1000 miles - at least based on when previous owners of my current and last 944 had there's re-tensioned on invoices. That said, I'm sure 1500 wouldn't make a big difference.

Also, I think it would be rude for you not to put a pic up of your Turbo, would love to see it again! [;)]

Cheers
Andy
