Bearing noise??

Hi all.

My '87 LUX has recently developed a noise from the rear end. Its more of a constant growl than the usual bearing woo woo woo noise and is linked to road speed. It is the same in any gear or neutral, and cornering makes no difference.

My first guess wasa the diff, but I'm confused as there is no change in the noise whether on the throttle or overrun.

Could it be something outside the gearbox? or am I looking at a replacement job?

Thanks in advance, as i am sure somebody else here will have had the same.

Check the obvious thing (although I admit it was not obvious to me when it happened to me[]) that it's not just slightly loose wheel nuts...

Could be hand brake related - retaining springs break
Bearing is obvious one and they do go from ok to noisey very quickly and as Mark says wheelnuts!
I had the same problem with a Lancia in the '80s, they had large bearings but a poor reputation! So I bought the new bearing without checking, but cured the problem with a wheelbrace!

Thanks Mark and Mike - I'll take a look at the weekend. I have been meaning to check the handbrake shoes for a long time, but.........
