Battery Charger for 992

I experienced the journey with the AA last weekend of getting into my 992 when the battery went flat.
i now have a new Porche trickle charger, but it is unclear if it is safe to plug in via the 12v socket in the passenger footwell. Anyone have any experience of this or does it have to be by clips direct to battery ? Thanks
 
Connect it to the battery but not directly onto both the studs, follow the instruction on this forum posted a few months ago.

Is there any reason why it should not work via 12v socket though ? I gather they work through cigarette lighter if you have smoking pack ?
 
The socket in the car is not on permanently, power down after approx 20min.

However there is a method to overcome this, although I do not use myself.
Procedure to keep 12v internal socket active:
Connect your charger to the 12v socket - Car ignition off, Charger NOT plugged into the wall.
Charger connected to the 12v socket - Car ignition on, plug in (turn on) charger.
Check lights on charger are moving through steps 1/2/3 etc
Turn ignition off - Charger lights should still be lit. You are good to go and the 12v socket should now stay live.



 
The footwell socket stays live after you have locked the car. I have been using it for the last few weeks, but now there are better ways to charge it!

Tim, my 992, the socket turns off after 20 mins unless you follow the guide I added it to this and other forums a few months ago, (its for a Ctek charger but I'm sure it will work for a Porsche charger too). Unbelievably, while the manual mentions the socket turns off, but it doesn't tell you how to keep it live?


 
Well done thank you, I saw it on 911 UK site. I use a permanent connection under the bonnet to connect. The bonnet can be kept closed.
 
Thanks for responses guys. I think I will invest in some permanent connectors from C-tech so I can hang charger tail into boot space to avoid having to play around with battery compartment cover all the time. Thanks again.
 
I used an extension lead from the footwell socket and left the connection out of the car. During lockdown I periodically connected the CTEK to this lead and left it charging.
 
Bought a CTech Lithium XS charger as the battery on my 992 is a lithium ion one. Connect under the bonnet to positive pole on battery and negative pole on other side as indicated in an earlier post the other month and as per the manual and leave it on.
 
Hey Val, just in case anyone searches this for help at a later date, the manual says you shouldn't connect the charger direct to the battery terminals. One lead connects to the positive on the battery and the other to negative pole/post across from the battery, but not to the battery. (In UK righthand drive cars the picture in the manual is reversed).

I think that's what you meant.


 
Sorry I thought that is what I said - positive to the positive on the battery and negative to a pole on the other side of the car away from the battery as per the manual. Negative never on the battery and when switching off that first then disconnect negative and then the positive.
 
Good Morning

I am having trouble getting the CTek Charger to stay on using the 12v cigarette lighter socket under the glove compartment of a 992 2023 MYR, UK car. I can get the charger to work but the connection drops out after a few minutes. I have tried all sorts of combination e.g. engine vs accessory mode, alarm on / off etc.

Looking at the above thread:
1. Connect your charger to the 12v socket - Car ignition off, Charger NOT plugged into the wall.
2. Charger connected to the 12v socket - Car ignition on, plug in (turn on) charger.
3. Check lights on charger are moving through steps 1/2/3 etc
4. Turn ignition off - Charger lights should still be lit. You are good to go and the 12v socket should now stay live.

My questions are:
(a) before step 1 - if the car has been in the garage for a while, does the engine need to be started first and then switched off?
(b) step 2 "ignition on" - is this just the accessory mode (which is enough to get the red light to blink) or does it involve starting the car / running the engine.
(c) step 4 "ignition off" - should the alarm be activated?
(d) I have a Nextbase dashcam connected to the OBD port. Does this make any difference / should it be disconnected?

Doesnt the accessory socket switch itself off a few minutes after the ignition is off?

Can't you attach to the relevant connectors by the battery?
 
In the past, I have tried various combinations using the accessory socket on my 992, but eventually decided the best option is to connect using the eyelet type fixings. It is suggested that the positive one goes to the small nut on the positive side of the battery and the negative to a nearby earthing bolt. It has been suggested by some that you don’t use the negative battery terminal.

Then route the short cable through the plastic cover so it just under the windscreen. It should be easy to attach the CTEK lead onto this connector every time you need to use the battery conditioner.

However please check your handbook for any instructions relating to your specific car before acting on this advice .

Thanks Greenman - correct, the accessory socket switches off after a few minutes which is the issue here. I managed to leave the car charging through last winter but it relied on a specific sequence of actions which I cannot seem to replicate this time. Temporarily, I have connected the charger to the battery & negative terminal using the crocodile clips supplied. Prefer a neater permanent solution such as David's.

Thanks David - I really like the tidy set up that you have where the cables are permanently wired and it is consistent with some of the solutions I have seen on other forums. When the vehicle is in regular use, do you need to cover / protect the connector from rain, jet wash etc?
 
There should be a waterproof cap on the CTEK connector, but I also just add a short length of black insulating tape over the top to make sure its always covered.

Personally, I'm not a lover of having spare live electrical wiring floating around beneath the bonnet, although I'm sure the CTEK version would be fine, particularly if there were a fuse breaker fitted to the live circuit.
I keep mine on charge using a CTEK cable with a cigar lighter plug into the footwell socket. I connect everything up, but don't power up until the ignition is fully switched on, then switch on the charger, turn off the ignition, check the charger lights are sequencing correctly and lock the car up.
So bit of a less complicated procedure than Cymro describes, but seems to work on my model OK. There's a section on battery charging in the "Battery Chat" thread on the 992 Technical Articles sub forum that you can find here.
