Hi. Just joined the Club having recently bought a good example of a 987.2 Cayman. Noticed that the battery is marked as 5/19. Although having no problems starting the car I am experiencing problems holding a charge on my CTek. Is a nearly 7 year old battery coming to the end of its life? What is the average lifespan of a battery members experience on a Porsche?

It all depends on the use of the car but given any failure will aways be at an inconvenient time and Porsche car electronics prefer well charged batteries, replacement would seem to be the safer option. If you have access to a battery tester this will give a more informed view of battery condition otherwise replacement should be considered.

Welcome to the Club and this forum.

I agree with Ralph’s comments, and since you’ve no idea about the car’s previous usage the sensible course of action would be to source and fit a new battery.

These cars are very sensitive to battery condition and if you’re able to do it it’s well worth leaving it on a battery conditioner to maintain it in tip-top condition. The original Moll battery on my 987.2 CS lasted nearly 16-years, and I had it on-charge whenever the car was in my garage.

I have a 987.2 Boxster, so the same issues owned for over 10 years and one battery replaced. These cars are indeed battery sensitive as soundly advised above.

My 987.2 will 'go to sleep' in 7 days from fully charged, and will be very weak by 2 weeks and then thereafter it is a heap of trouble to get to open the car and sort the battery, I have done this once, you do not want to do it a second time.
I do not connect to a conditioner as the car lives outside all year, so a different approach by me. I usually attach a charger to the car for a few hours every week or so esp in the winter.

I personally would change the battery for new so you know where you are. This will reset a few controls, but are simple to re-establish or take it to a good retailer of batteries and let them get it straight.
For the cost, not worth the worry.

The original Moll battery on my 987.2 began failing to hold charge for more than a week at 7 years old. I soldiered on with a Ctek charger for another year, by which time it would loose charge in just one day. A new Bosch S4010 battery was fitted at about 58K miles. Because the car was being used regularly all year round, I did not need to use the Ctek. This battery lasted 7 years before it too started showing signs of failing so was replaced immediately at around 98K miles. Some people who have kept their batteries on the Ctek seem to get much better life out of them.
 
The battery in my 981S is over 13 years old. It has been fault free but given its age, I asked my OPC to check it at the last service. They did a full battery test and told me that it was in good condition and did not need replacing.
I'm surprised that the battery can last this long. Perhaps it is because the car is garaged and on a battery conditioner. I also always turn off the stop start.

Thanks. The manual states no problems specific to Porsche when installing the new battery - basically just disconnect and connect the new one. Is that the case?
