Ok, one more shot... this is where my wheel is interfering with the spring... Any clues what might have happened??

Simply wrong clearance, wheel offset? Also surprised as with some race car build history your barke hoses are not steel braided...

Wouldn't explain why the wheel suddenly moved into the spring... I guess something wasn't tightened up after they put the set-up on it last week?
Car has only ever been a garage queen in a collection from it's build as a 3.8 RS in the factory, no race history, don't know that they would have had steel braided hoses as standard?
Also think the speedo has been wound forward to match the service history of the destroyed c/s who's chassis number it now wears... expert who collected it this afternoon suggested it was very low mileage indeed... we know it's only done about 10k (km) from the build into this spec... some suggestion that it had done virtually nothing before that... just sat in the collection.

Talking of set up, how much front camber are people using on road cars rather than track day specials? I alledgedly had 2.3 degs and that felt like a lot when I was trying to keep it in a straight line on the motorway? Tempted to wind some more of that off...

Makes my C2S feel stable (that hunts about like a truffle hound as well, any clues? Worn dampers maybe?)...

Cheers
Rick

What rims is it running ?

The tyre looks very taut to the bead ...

Were twin exhausts part of the 3.8 package ?

(Did I say it looks fantastic --- and you won't be watching the interior when you drive it, whether Bergundy or otherwise !)

Rick I wonder if it was slowly moving on the way home as opposed to one sudden movement, hence the problem holding it in a straight line.
My car had a semi race set up to start and I just couldnt get on with it on our roads round here, not sure what std set up is but maybe worth setting to std.
Tyre pressures make a big difference as you know, would check them when back.

p.s those tyres are definitely to thin for those rims.

Rick,
Its easy given your pic, - the spring is very close (too close probably) but the difference between one side and the other is that the spring on the strut on this side is positioned differently to the other side which has no problem. On this side the spring coil is positioned so that the coil is passing the edge of the rim at the point where the rim sits. (On the other side, I suspect the gap between the coils coincides with the edge of the rim.). This is possible because a spring is not located in the rotational axis. Its free to sit anywhere on the perch, which would not matter usually. Except when 'ol moneybags got those rims he got 'em a bit too wide and with use the spring has moved very slightly and is now fouling the rim edge.
I would jack it up, - remove the wheel, (add an axle stand for your safety).
Measure the distance from the centre of the wheel to the rim edge. (If its an 18" wheel the dist will be 9") - here in Ireland anyway [;)].
Then measure from the centre of the hub up 9" - and the coil will pass very close to this point.
If you lock the steering column, hold the spring with both hands and turn it carefully whichever way it moves easiest, until the 9" dimension coincides with the gap between the coils it will be cured.
There is still nothing to stop it recurring, - but there is nothing to make it recur either. I suspect it was just very close when first built, which fits with the history you describe.
It will avoid you damaging the rims until you get a proper fix if you are not happy with waiting and seeing.
Hope this helps

964RS

That would make sense George... but given the rims are factory fit, I would assume the factory must have built it with enough tolerance to clear all the time?
Well have dispatched to local specialist (on a flat bed...) and they think they can cure.... so we'll see... might not be back for Thurs though PJ... sorry.
Any thoughts on my question about what camber on the front for road use?

Thanks Chris, I can assure u with the set-up where it is at the moment, you can't even look at the dials, let alone the interior when u r driving! ;-)

Finally had time to read the thread!!

Nice one Rick -that is one unique motor.

Now, before I look at the interiror shots, pass my Ray-Bans over......[8D] [;)]

Ref your camber, might be worth reducing it to 964RS standard of -1 degree +/- 10' for starters.....

If you have massive problems to keep it in a straight line reduce also the rear camber - that´s how my Cup Car learnt to run on street legal tyres. It´s not only the front camber. Think you´ll have to sort that out for your personal taste step by step.

Good luck!

Hacki

P. S.: What about toe in? Should be 0 deg.

thanks for the compliments guys... and the set-up info.... have got no camber on the rear Hacki, and am going to head towards -1 on the front... will let you know how I get on with it... now have to work out how to squeeze an extra pink slip into the middle of the race season so I can get across to one of the meets and compare notes properly.

The final installment... car back this morning... (looking mighty fine too if I might say so...) and back to its snorting best... diagnosis? When the set-up was put on it before I collected it "the bolt that adjusts the camber wasn't done up properly." Kinda glad the final slump didn't happen on the autobahn... shall be taking this up with the supplier... been set-up to the original Porsche spec now so we'll see if it feels better once I've had a little run out in it (once the gendarmes have gone to bed...)
Cheers
Rick
