Are Spyders Becoming Extinct At OPCs!

Interesting RS stats from CHAT GPT noting no 2025 stats currently available but will be eventually :unsure:


  • About 326 Porsche 718 Spyder RS units are currently registered in the UK (as of late 2024).
  • A huge jump from 2023’s total of 20 units highlights that nearly all Spyder RS models were built and registered in the last year.

Why no registries yet for 2025?

  1. Data lag in UK first‑registration records: Official datasets typically lag by a few months. As of now, no 2025 first‑registration entries for Spyder RS are visible.
  2. Limited allocation & small volumes: Porsche issued only a small number of RS Spyder units in 2024 to UK buyers. It’s likely most were registered in late‑2024, leaving few or none to be registered in 2025.
  3. End of production scheduled for October 2025, meaning few if any new 2025‑model cars would remain unregistered into calendar-year 2025.



· While the total production for the standard 718 Spyder is estimated at around 8,000 units, the Spyder RS was more deliberately limited.

· No exact figure for RS production has been shared by Porsche—so current totals remain speculative.

· Porsche has confirmed that the Spyder RS was developed as the final combustion‑engine variant of the 718 family, debuting in May 2023 with deliveries starting later that summer

· Due to production bottlenecks—particularly in carbon fiber parts—quantity is naturally restricted

This Brand New RS has K in its VIN! WP0ZZZ989SK234980 I always thought GT Porsches were made at Stuttgart seems like they have all actually been made at Osnabruck

All Boxster& Cayman production was moved to Osnabruck at least couple of years ago now I think in part to free up space to build the Taycan and future electric models. It’s actually a VW factory that is being closed later this year - one reason why 718 production has to end imminently.

Many thanks for clarification seems likely a move Porsche could live to regret as the 718's could have easily run on for many years to come still:unsure:

The 718 platform is not compliant with Euro security and electronic driver aids and lived on with limited EU type certification expiring July 2026. Porsche’s plans for EV replacement were set in stone and are currently in disarray and this together with excess group production capacity conspired to ‘force’ the Osnerbruck closure.

I can't imagine the cost to make the 718 platform compliant with Euro security and driver aids couldn't have been far more cost effective route than what looks like 2 years plus of lost sales while the sports car world waits for a 718 EV which may never achieve the sales success needed to be viable

I am on my 2nd JCW Mini 2022 still running the same engine and gearbox my 2016 JCW had and the 2025 4th generation is still running same engine again but sadly for me they have dropped the manual gearbox and gone dual clutch only

So if BMW/Mini can get their car with very old running gear Euro street legal surely Porsche could have managed that too:unsure:
 
I guess the cost of keeping the factory going or moving the production line yet again for relatively small volumes and short duration was the killer.

That makes more sense than Porsche claiming they couldn't meet Euro security & driver aids etc but as a Boxster owner since 1997 x 9 examples to date the current limbo land is really extremely disappointing not to mention the EV only option going forward :censored:
