AOS replacement

Thought I would share my experience with my recently acquired Cayman 987.2, 2.9L. Has full SH and no mention of AOS being changed in its 66K mi when I acquired it. There is a puff of white smoke on cold start up in cold and hot ambient temperatures. A slight roughness to the idle, stalls easily, and very very hard to take the oil filler cap off when idling. Also noted that when I fitted a BMC filter there was oily residue on the plenum, and the tail pipe was too sooty for my liking. There is no knocking or tapping noise. So did lots of research and watched a few videos and went for it 😊. Ordered and OEM 1 off design911, and with the appropriate kit, took me 1.5 hours, suspect others might do it slicker. But the trickiest bit is getting it out, apart from that, relatively easy. On first start up no smoke (although I suspect there maybe some oil in the pipes) and smooth as anything. Oil filler cap comes off easy. Drives beautifully. Strongly suggest to get it done if you have any of those symptoms even if they are mild/subtle.

I went through all this and a bit more on my 987.2 2.9 Boxster.

Changed the AOS twice.
I also removed the pies connecting it to the inlet chamber and cleaned the excess oil out to stop quickly the residue oil dribbling down to the engine valve(s) and smoke on start up.

This did work, but the biggest change I made was not to have the oil level at the 'Max' position on the dash indicator, but to have the top 2 'bars' empty.
This works a treat.
I can still get a small whiff of white smoke if I cold start the car and turn the engine off while still in the cold start high rpm mode, but not all the time.

Hope this helps.

Noted, I will let out 200-300mls from the engine oil when I do the transmission oil

The bars shown on the dash are the equivalent of Max and Min on a normal dip-stick, so 2 bars down (not filled in) is about 1/2 way between the max/min.
Too easy to over fill and that is when you get all the smoke issues.
