Anyone gone for the 3.4 upgrade when rebuilding?

Taking my '87 3.2 in for a rebuild in January - only 70,000 from new, but the oil leak is getting a little worse and the smoke on start up also, so figured i would bite the bullet and give it some love.

Whilst doing this, I am considering some upgrades such as the 3.4 Mahle Barell and piston set, exhaust and anything else (without incurring massive cost!) worth considering without changing the look of the car.

Has anyone done this? Is it worth it for the extra power? Anyone got any suggestions of what else i should consider whilst it's in for a rebuild?

PS: It is booked in with SCS Porsche in Honiton.
 
Its a lot of money for not much more power really, the mods you list are what, £15K? You may get 20 odd bhp gain

A few guys have done it over on Impactbumpers.com, I would go and ask in there
 
As Matthew writes, a lot of money for little gain.

I considered this on my hillclimb 3.2 engine, go to 3.4 or even 3.5 with machining.

My engine build was DIY and my budget was £10,000.

I kept with 3.2 as the P&B were perfect, added G60 cams, high comp pistons and Carrillo roads and bolts and a few other bits, twin plug ignition, but PMO carb (already on the engine from a previous re-build), racing valve springs etc.

Bill (no labour except for twin plug machining) was just under £10,000 in parts.

Result is 320 bhp and 300 lbft and about 6 mpg....

It is not a road car, but I have a 73T with a 3.2 in it, standard, 140K miles and no oil anywhere escaping, never been apart.
The time and effort to do this engine was huge and this was my 4th 911 flat 6 rebuild. Labour costs will be high!

When the day comes it will be a simple refresh to factory spec, possibly 964 grind cams (OK with the standard pistons) but the rest just refreshed.

Nice road engine the 3.2 as it was designed.
