Any tips on cold starting?

Just picked up my first 912...In love already[:)]

But any tips on getting it fired up? It's taking 20-30 sec to catch....

What carbs are you running?

My car takes a while to catch if it has been left for a week or so - the fuel drains back from the Solexes but if it has only been left a day or so, it fires straight away.
 
Welcome Matt... all the above sounds good, they need lots of gas to go when cold, you tend to worry you are going to flood it but you will get the hang of it. (assuming no other issues)

As Nick says no gas when hot.
 
Yup .. pump three times, hold the accelerator down slightly, box in neutral, clutch fully in.

912's are actually not too difficult to start when you get the hang of it.

OK - Next question!! I've got no heat on flipping the exchanger. Any places to check first? Is it a difficult job to get sorted? I'm hoping it's the cable.... I'll wear a coat but the missus won't get in if it's nippy!!

Check to see if the cables are moving the flaps in the flapper boxes, easy to see from the underneath in the back. Beware though, if your J tubes are leaking then you will be getting exhaust in the car (not good). You can get a Carbon Monoxide tester from Halfords etc to test for these poisonous fumes in your cabin.

Is your car european or american? There are heater differences.
 
Its a Yank car. Thanks for the info. Will check it out.

Had my first disaster on the long trip to Wales. Fuel pump playing up...and the 'slighty' oil leak became a 'major splattering'. Currently being (expensively) investigated by Merlin Cambria in Cardiff (The only place I could get to!)

Fingers crossed.....
