Any Bad Points On These?

ORIGINAL: chrisjcoe

Have you seen this one on Gumtree apparently moving abroad and looks good in the pictures http://www.gumtree.com/p/cars-vans-motorbikes/porsche-944-turbo-s-1989-250-bhp-guards-red-2-owners-excellent-condition-bargain/104512319

That looks a nice car, somewhat over what I can afford though unfortunately! I can dream though.

It might be priced above your range but well down for what might be a good Turbo and you could end up spending a lot to put a sub 2K car into the right condition. I was tempted by this one I must add even though I love my S2. Better to spend £1500 more on a better car and be able to drive it than have to spend it when you get it to be able to.

Yeah, well aware of the spend-to-save adage!

I'm after spending no more than £2k, and actually want a car that needs a bit of work done to it so I can get my hands dirty. Nothing too difficult, like dropping transmission out, because space and tools are limited. A lot of the cars I've listed fit the bill, but I'd run away from having to spend £500-1000 getting the sills done within the first few months of ownership. I am going to see what's still available at the weekend, and jump in the car to go see/buy.

I understand fully where you are coming from - exactly the same place as me! - but I would add that dropping the gearbox is an easy job, pair of ramps socket set and a couple of good straps.

They are generally ok to work on.

Sadly, I only have a 3 meter wide area to park, and it's not concreted yet. It's crushed granite, but is due to be concreted in the next few months. So to drop the transmission, I anticipate needing a good concrete base, a trolley jack and some axle stands, before I even think about the actual tools I need. So, transmission is something that will be a while off! Brakes, suspension, gaskets, servicing, etc, I can see myself doing these ok. Then, by the time I'm ready to tackle a big job, I'll hopefully be in a bigger house with a proper workshop. So in the meantime, I'm after a car that probably needs a bit of TLC but is sound underneath. I hope £1.5-2 should get me that, but you can never be certain with any car.

To be honest Chris I wouldn't worry about looking to hard for a car that needs a little work. I'd buy the best car that you possibly can as I guarantee you any 944 will need work doing to it, even if it's won a top concourse which in fact is more likely to need work as it's unlikely to be a daily driver.

good luck with your car hunting

Pete

I know this has been mentioned earlier but have you thought about a 924S similar power as an early 944 but less weight, seems to be lots going for the price your looking at spending. I had one before and during my S2 ownership and truth be known I would have preferred to keep it and sell the S2 but it was easier to sell the 924S and I could only find time to drive one of them.

I loved the square dash, the way it drove (easier than the S2) and its excentricity. Still oging strong in the hands of a TIPEC member.

You could always turn it into a Carrera GT with a body kit.

Happy to get a 944S, I have been watching a few of them too. I'm ready to buy a car now, but the only time I had time to go for a viewing trip, someone got in there just before me and bought it! I just need to take the chance and buy one now, and hope it's not hiding a world of pain.

Red from Herts is the current winner, if I could get £250 off. Grey from Kings Lynn is another, but the belts need doing really and the seller won't drop the price with that in mind.

id take a risk on the blue s2 for £2000, ok its got a little rust on the sills, most 944s will have now though and its got great history, I rang porsche about mine and although they couldnt send it out were happy to spend nearly an hour on the phone going through the last 20 odd years they had serviced it with me.

bargain.

my car sounds like what you want, has all been welded and is solid, has had new belts etc and only needs a new front strut as there is a small amount of play, front drivers seat is worn and needs a small amount of tidying, all the common faults have been sorted, only selling as I need to get my BMW done.

I always want to buy a 944 ( if the price is keen) [:D]. The thing re yours is I quite like the colour and you're down the road from me so if it was good value why not.

P.S I did e mail you via the forum asking to see any ad don't know if it worked ?

Regards Mas

They could stamp a new book for you. I have a brand new service book in my safe which I bought in 1994 after the OPC 'lost' mine. Id got all of the previous stamps (three, IIRC) replaced by Merlin etc before it magically turned up, under the seat in my own car, in their workshop.

yes i know - but no-one appears to want to buy it !

Im amazed at the number of 'tyre-kickers' around though !

Its an old and well done subject but they just arent selling unlrss they are super cheap or amazingly special. Combination of the economy and petrol prices. People try and big prices up but normal folk are cutting back not buying toys.
I never tyre kick as i usually know if i want a car just by asking questions. Its very rare i view and dont buy but it oes mean i ask too many proper questions for many sellers and especially e bay sellers who seem to think putting it on e bay means you should just accept any old cr** they come out with. Im titally ******ed off with e bay at the mo but thats another story. Lord forbid you should have the cheek to ask an e bay seller 'when' the belts were changed.
