Another one of THOSE encounters...

I have to eat a very large portion of humble pie here, because having owned a lot of retro cars, mainly Italian I always thought the 944 was not a proper porsche! Shush let me finish, I thought it was just a golf in a posh frock, slow and owned by people who were "bankers" and yet.... Every time I looked for a replacement retro car I found myself browsing the ads for 944 almost like a guilty pleasure and now having got a 944s a couple months back I can't believe how good they are and now feel I've missed out, I love it and have no intensions of selling it just improve it and have to say the people on this forum are some of the most well informed, mature and friendly people I have met on any forum not the usual (max power) brigade! Spoilers, tacky stickers, and furry dice. It truly is a proper porsche and so well built.

Ah come on, I had a 944 once and only had problems with it, everybody knows they're just rubbish!!"

...as he finished scratching his 4rse, mistaking it for his elbow.

Must have been something like that.

My latest encounter was on Saturday at the Porsche Experience Centre Silverstone. As we were queuing to go onto the circuit to get to the skid pan the instructor wandered out of the building, saw my 944, did a double take and wandered around the car looking intently at. He then walked over to the drivers window and motioned me to wind the window down. I thought "oh no! he's spotted a problem with the car and won't let me go out!"

I opened the window and he stuck his head in. "Lovely car," he said. "I had an '89 turbo. It was one of the best cars I ever had." Then he looked up, saw the others from our group queuing and said "Wow, there are lots of them here. Brilliant".

Finally had one of my own! Driving through the average speed camera hell that is the A14, a guy on a Harley keeps pulling up alongside then slowing down, while giving me a lot of looks. Half expecting some colourful Essex style hand gestures for an unintentional slight I may have committed, he gives me a long thumbs up and nods before racing off. I wouldn't get that in my Volvo!

Ahhhhh .... I don't think we have met, have we? Maybe it's best for you if we keep it that way, eh? [;)]

Oli.

Whilst at the wonderful Chainbridge hotel in Berwyn on the River Dee (region 19 WoTY) a half inebriated up state New Yorker spotted James' 968 and spotting my Porsche logo'd shirt proceeded to try to be half knowledgable boldly profering that the car he had seen in the car park was 5 litre. No we said, "it's 3 litre". "Oh wow, in the states the nine twenty eight is five litre". "The same as in the uk but that is 3 litre, because it is a 968" "Is that like a UK only model? I've never seen one. It's based on the 9 28 right?" No, you could effectively say that it is really a 944 S4 but so much was changed from the 944 that Porsche decided to give it 968 nomenclature". " But it's a five litre V8?" "No its a straight four"..... and so it went on until he went to bed completely cconfused. In the morning he sheepishly realised that the backward sloping headlight had confused him and that in the day light he could see that the shape was most un 928 like.
He then proceeded to tell us that he had taken the train ride to carog and Llangollen the day before, to which we said, "why didn't you wait until today when the carriages are pulled by steam loco?" D'oh!
