Another one of THOSE encounters...

So I'm in the petrol station today, giving the 944 a tankful in preparation for its run up to the Porsche Show tomorrow and a chap comes up to me to chat and tell me that he used to own a 944. He wants to tell me all about his old car, how much he loved it and how he has always regretted selling it. This happens fairly often and it seems that the 944 is just a "feel good car". Most people who have owned one love them and want to talk about them.

Does this happen to others or do I just attract former owners?

Yep... happens to me.
Was talking to a guy at work yesterday who it turned out used to have an S2 as a daily driver. Best car he ever owned he said. Sold it a few years ago because it was costing too much to run (he paid to have both the sills replaced) and bought a Seat Leon.... Diesel.

Yes me too, only had my black 944s1 a couple months, guy in petrol station thought the 944 was the definitive 80s sports car! Even better looking than the 911's I couldn't argue really!

Ye I've had it a fair few times, always getting approached by people asking about the car saying they used to love the look of them when they were younger or had one.
The three best one's I can think off are;

had one guy ask me if I bought the car new, which I dont know whether it was a compliment to the car, or an insult to me or both as the cars 2years older than me lol. Or possibly he shouldn't be on the road.

had another guy approach me to talk about it and turned out to be the guy who sold my dad a 924s a about 10years ago which made me love these cars

Or an ex VW dealer I think who basically creamed himself when I pulled into Tesco, put his to bags down and leave them as he pretty much ran over to ask if he could have a look around it.

Maybe it's the area I live in and the local demographic (East London - fill in the dots) but everyone who sees the car has a mate/buvva/uncle who has one of those "but much more powerful than yours".

Well they're obviously misinformed Oli, as we all know there is no car more powerful than an S2. [:D]

All the Turbos are in and around Brick Lane, then...?

Yup, I seem to get one or two of those chaps (the chaps who sold their 944s) although they tend to own other Porkers now. Maybe it's to with where I live.

Oddly enough I came across a chap today who was in two minds about getting rid of his 944 ;).

A while ago I was on the way to view a potential replacement for the 944 (Alfa as it happens) and stopped in two lanes of traffic on the way. A taxi pulled up next to me, driver wound down his window and said something along the lines of "Beautiful car, mate, proper special". And I thought yes, he's right. I've still got the 944! (Plus the Alfa handled badly in bends anyway, nothing like as planted as said 944)

The only comment I remember ever getting was shortly after I bought the S2, in 2001. As I was filling up at a petrol station, some knob turned up.
"- Are you pleased with the car?
- Well yes, it's very nice...
- Ah come on, I had a 944 once and only had problems with it, everybody knows they're just rubbish!!", all in a loud laugh obviously trying to take the piss. I drove off without feeling the need to comment.

Since then I don't really pay attention to passers-by apparently showing interest in the car when I park somewhere (men at least!!). Thankfully most people these days seem to ignore what car it is, and it still turns little boys' heads, especially when raising pop ups. :)

Some chaps on a certain garage day will remember this example I gave (before the thread deviates too much!).

On one day when the red mist descended in front of me I may have got slightly carried away. At the next set of lights I was expecting to (quite rightly) get a bit of a good seeing to (well, shouting match) regarding my actions. The outcome could not have been any different. The chap had a huge grin on his face, followed by him saying 'Mate, I love everything about that Porsche'. It made me feel a little better about my 'lowly' Porker :).

I did have a chap with a 996 Cabrio Carrera 2 telling me his car was head over heels over my car in every way. Considering his car is 10 years newer, he's probably right, but to rub it in one's face?

My first Club event as an "organiser" was the MPH show at Earls Court in '06, with the Top Gear live event. We had a "red braces" '80's theme, with three 3.2s and three 944s, all in Guards red.

For three days, all we had was people coming to the stand either having owned a 944 and saying it was the best car they'd ever owned, or people being so shocked over the low values that they would consider buying one as they'd dreamed of it since being a kid. This was when a decent Lux made nearer £5K, remember.

At every event I've done, you overhear people saying "I wish I'd never sold my 944". It cracks me up when there are complaints about the Club not paying attention to the 944, as almost every board member for years owns, or has owned, one. [&:]

Given the run in I had this evening with a complete CUNextTuesday who was driving a sorry excuse for an Audi A3, I'd just put it down to fuckwittery of the first order.

(996 C2 cab, you say? My old boss had one of those, and he was a complete pillock. And I suspect that a half-decent 944 of any type is a better car than the b-stard child of Toyota and BMW - something I explained to my ex-boss at length soon after I handed in my notice to him! [:)] )

I have had a couple of garage encounters with the 944 and 968 and once, on my way to a local butchers shop on a Farm a couple of villages away in the 944 had a guy in a Boxster going the other way turn around and come flying up behind me, I then had a play and he followed me into the car park. he leapt out, a bit sweaty, and asked me what the hell it was as he hadn't seen one before but spotted the Porsche badge. He then told me he couldn't keep up with me on the roundabouts as he got too much understeer!

Before I bought I just had people asking why the hell I wanted to buy one. Once I bought I've had 3 people saying they want one and a load more saying they wish they hadn't sold the one they had years ago. I've never had randoms come up to me though.

I can't think of a single car I sold that I wish I still had!

Ah come on, I had a 944 once and only had problems with it, everybody knows they're just rubbish!!"

...as he finished scratching his 4rse, mistaking it for his elbow.

Erm, as the owner of an S2 track car AND a 996 C2 cab, I'm now very confused??? Knob or Not-Knob? You decide!
