After a rear end shunt last Bank Holiday Monday I have today received the sorry news that my 944 will be a Cat C total loss requiring £4k + to repair.

I have been offered the opportunity to buy the salvage for £495.

The damage to the car is to the rear bumper, modest looking dents in the rear panel but only around the Porsche script, rear nearside light (cracking only), registration plate and a couple of very small dents to the boot floor.

The car is a 1986 lux in Zermatt Silver with dark brown pinstripe/black leatherette interior with I believe genuine mileage of 104000. Pre-accident, it was in tidy but not concourse winning condition with a small amount of corrosion at the bottom of the front wings and a few stone chips but otherwise pretty clean. It has MOT until February or March next year (passed with no advisories) and a recent service with belts changed.

I haven't got the time or the expertise to break it myself but it seems such a shame to let it disappear and I suspect that it has a number of parts of value to people here to include newish Porsche mats from Porsche Apart, new Porsche coloured centre caps, tidy looking Telephone dial alloys with matching tyres with plenty of life left in them and all the electrics worked to include fully functioning digital clock! Decent Blaupunkt CD radio 12 months old in it too. Mechanically sound to the best of my knowledge.

It's still road legal and a bit of panel beating and a new bumper would get it looking presentable. It would make a cheap (if somewhat non-Turbo slow) track day project. Cetainly a repairer if you're not paying full labour rates or are fussy about all brand new parts.

I have some pre and post accident photos of it but can't work out how to post them here although I'll email them to anyone interested.

Obviously it would be silly to sell it for less than the £495 Direct Line are offering but I don't want to make a profit out of anyone here if it's of interest to them. Suspect a prompt decision will be required as its incurring storage charges. Car is at HB Panelcraft in Preston if you want to see it.

Cheers.

Hi Rob,

Sorry to hear about the accident. If the damage is that slight is it worth getting it repaired by a small local bodyshop who'll probably fix it for a few hundred?

The buy-back price seems pretty good. Make sure you get a decent payout from the insurers - a 1987 Lux owner has just had his value raised to £2.5k from the initial £850 offer......[:)]

Very sad news.

I see where Paul is coming from but wonder if ultimately you could sell it for more in a semi repaired state over and above the cost of the repairs - if you see what I mean.

You could buy another Lux and swap off the better bits from your original car and then sell your original in its current state with the lesser parts from the new car for the same money again.

I like the sound of "a track slag" though. Someone with a bit of space might jump on that and get some good cheap fun. If I had the space I'd be giving it some serious thought myself.

I wondered about that but it's a question of time/inconvenience and still having a Cat C car. Payout offer not finalised yet - I've a box of history/bills they've not seen yet. I'm afraid my love affair with my car has been spoiled by the memory of "screech/BANG" and the thoughts of how glad I am the kids weren't in it at the time and I just haven't got the heart to try and fix it. [:(]

And,

If you need a letter from the Club official to verify the condition of the car when I last saw it and an appraisal of the current market values,

May not work, but I'm currently hitting a better than 50% average.....[;)]

really sorry to hear about that Rob. Unbelievabley my first 944Lux was also a 86 zermatt silver same interior . After 9 years and 75k I lost it on a roundabout at 20mph ! bumped the rear light corner and the front bumper and it was like yours drivable but an insurance write off. Really missed the old girl (sad b*****d

Anyway I would be very interested in yoursas my everyday work car. I need an urgent replacement for my TDi mondy. Could you send me a couple of pics too please. sound@solutionsuk.freeserve.co.uk

Sorry to hear about your bad news, however the damage you described sounds exactly like the damage my car sustained last year. I'm not sure what the final bill was as my insurance company took care of the invoice which I never saw, but for my own purposes expecting a battle with the insurance company, I got a quote for repair from a local Porsche specialist of £2500. It could be a case of the bodyshop over-egging the quote as it's an insurance company. The new parts required to repair my car was the rear panel, bumper, bumper brackets, lower under-bumper spoiler (which the lux doesn't have) and a few minor miscellanious items. It might be worth getting a second opinion. And even then a Cat C write off is basically a financial write off so buying back the car might be a serious option if you can get the work done for a reasonable price at a non-approved bodyshop.

Sorry to hear about that - I am convinced that insurance companies are trying to write off older cars to get rid of them, even when they are repairable. Not that I believe in conspiracy theories mind!

Thanks for the interest guys. Direct Line said they weren't interested in a club official's opinion because they would be biased and that the value would be lower from someone who didn't like Porsches! You couldn't make it up. I of course being the victim of the accident who does like Porsches simply want to be put in the position I was in before the accident...

hold out for more money Rob. I worked for N U 3 years ago We had a standard policy of offering as little as possible and not negotiating . Customers had to get really difficult with loads of letters and telephone calls before we offered more. Its standard practice. You will get more if you push hard enough. They have to accept an expert's assesment afterall they use their assesor to arrive at a value for the car.
Make sure the assessor is aware that your car is an oval dash model and therfore worth up to £750-£1000 more than pre 1986 cars. Mine was unaware of this and increased the value by £500 when I pointed this out.

Get an agreed value when you insure it.

If your insurance co dont do it then change for one that does.

My 951 has a (slightly) higher agreed value this year cos of the new bits I`ve fitted which in relation to last year has been agreed that they add value to the car. the premium remained the same.

My understanding was the agreed value had little bearing on the ultimate value if they had to pay out....but that might just be me being cynical. I do remember being told that somewhere though.

with many thanks for the interest and advice, a forum user has agreed to buy the car and is collecting it shortly. Apologies and thanks to the others who expressed interest, especially Axl who missed out by minutes.
