I'm hoping for general reassurance that my clattery S2 transmission is much like many others out there. I haven't really heard any others so I've got nothing to gauge mine against.
After a 5 month lay-off, my 197,000 miles old S2 seems to be quite a bit more noisy from the transaxle area than before. When in neutral there's a distinct 'clatter' from the rear. Imagine Woody Woodpecker on speed!
If I then depress the clutch pedal, the clatter disappears. Is this usual or indicative of something like a worn gearbox mount or torque tube, or even a wobbly exhaust or loose heat shields?
The gearbox was dropped in the past month so the petrol tank could be dropped. My specialist says he was happy with the condition of the mount, but something is certainly clattering back there. Putting my ear to the area, the noise is certainly coming from the transaxle rather than the exhaust mounts or heat shields.
There's no whine from the gearbox when in gear so I'm pretty happy that it's not serious gearbox wear. 1st into 2nd can grind slightly very occasionally, but the gearbox operates well (apart from a tediously long-throw). Clutch is only about 5,000 miles old.
Thank you for any comments.
