Another 912 for sale on Ebay in the US

Seems like you are trying to get forum members to buy up all available Porsches in the US. Looks nice though.
A couple of questions for anyone out there, as I know very little about early porsches.
The other half would like an early 911, I' m trying to pursuade him to get a 912.
Is buying from the US foolproof?
What is the approximate cost of shipping from the states?
Can you get project cars and if so are parts readily available?

Buying from the US has all the same pitfalls as buying here, except you can' t see the car! The Americans do rather tend to " tart" the car up for sale and you may see a lovely shiny paint job and even a nice interior, but there is often a rust bucket underneath. In theory cars from Southern CA, Texas, Arizona etc, the so-called Dry States, should be free of rot but there is no guarantee. I have heard it said that anyone who says he has a rust-free car just hasn' t found the rust yet. I have even seen adverts that say " the usual rust" , what does that mean?
Shipping from the US is very easy. If teh car is on the East Coast you can get it on a RORO ferry for less than a £1000. A 40' container from the West Coast is probably around $2000 (don' t hold me to any of these prices). You can get 3 911/912 in a 40' container if you put one on a ramp so it goes halfway over the next one.
There are loads of project cars in the US, but there are plenty here as well.
As for 912 parts I defer to the 912 boys

Unfortunately my LA contact would want paying to go view it as it' s in Northern California.
I bought a " rust-free" 66 912 from this area last year but luckily got my money back. I still want a SWB model, but as I' m in no rush I' m holding out for an Arizona car.
I' ve emailed the vendor asking for the pictures anyway. If this looks like an exceptional car, I' ll let you know.

All of the door locks are functional. . I rebuilt all 4 calipers and installed new brake pads. The brakes need Bleeding.

Nicola: I' ve bought 2 early Porsches from the US in the last year. The costs were roughly:
1. Shipping in shared container: $850
2. Shipping insurance (1.5% of car value)
3. Apply for a Binding Tariff Agreement from the Inland Revenue (free) and you then only pay 5% VAT (as it' s a historic vehicle)
4. Pay your UK shipping agent for " De-vanning" /unloading: £250
5. Register in the UK: £25
6. MOT £40 and you' re away!
The only other costs maybe for a truck to transport the car from the vendor to the port (around $1 per mile).
Oh, and I nearly forgot, the £££££ you will spend to get it how you want it [

I am concerned that you paid 5% VAT. I have imported 5 or 6 classic cars from the US and never paid VAT as long as the car is more than 10 years old. That was over 10 years ago, but I wasn' t aware they had changed the rules.
They may try and ask for duty as well, but there should be no duty on a product made in or originating in the EC.

Is there no 5.1 stage - put UK spec (and dip to the left) lights in?
You will have to carry out any mods to get the car through the MOT, ie dip to left, show white sideligts to front, probably show orange indicators at the rear, fog light to rear etc.
The indicator lenses are about £20 each, and the front indicator housing will need to be modified.

Mmmmm, I spoke to several thousand [
] people before my first import (including DVLA, C&E, shippers) and they all mentioned the need to pay reduced import duty (sorry not VAT).
And I did miss out some of the other minor costs (new headlights, number plates etc).
I left the orange indicator/sidelight front lenses on and routed the sidelight wire to the small bulb in the main headlights (spare pair I had from Cafco £35/pair). According to my local MOT garage there is no legal requirement for fog-lights or even seat belts on the 66 or 69 cars I imported.
If you want to pass your MOT quickly with an early car with red rear indicator lenses you could always route the indicators through to the reverse lights (put in an orange bulb) and add a temporary reverse light. Gives you time to source decent lights/lenses.

About the costs of shipping you need to add VAT to all the costs once here in the UK. Thats the bit that gets me not just VAt on the car price but the shipping unloading etc etc ..
One thing by the sounds of it can you get a 912 though on the reduced Tarrif ??? I had to put a real case though to get it for my 1954 356. No chance on the 69!
