Anone know this one?

Just to sum this thread up I thought I'd better post a pic of what I actually ended up buying as my 'cough' practical every day car (haha ooh dear what happened!). I'm very happy though and she is a real beauty of an example. Nicely tuned and a real rare find:

I was going to try and sell you my pug aswell

I looked at the 205 gti it is on 'the list' but I heard the gearing is a bit short for motorway work?

I've always liked the spitfire too, just never thought of owning one. When I first got it home I stood looking at it in the garage and thought 'Oh god what have I done!' but she's not doing too badly so far. It appears to be economical to drive, it's cheap to tax, £158 per year to insure, parts are easily available and inexpensive and it's fun to drive (you can saw at the wheel like Fangio even at road speeds ;)

Plus in my usual style it's not quite standard this one. Runs electronic ignition, 45DCOE Webber carb and inlet manifold, big valve head, fast road cam, ballanced and lightened crank/flywheel, new pistons, up rated oil pump and mocal cooler.

Plus it has uprated headlights, brakes, poly bushes and spax adjustables.

Dont confuse it for a fast car though.. it just sounds better :)

p.s. Actually the gearbox is amazing. I was expecting something terrible but it's as smooth and tight as my modern Golf was and the overdrive engages/dis-engages with the kind of speed you might expect from a DSG box (It sounds fantastic coming into villages as I manually go 4th to 3rd and then flick out of overdrive so you get a Lamborghini type blip in revs as it cuts down a gear.
