Annoying exhaust noise 911 997.2

Hi,
New to the club and the forum. Bought my first 911 last November, a 997.2 Carrera 4S Cab in black. Absolutely love the car but would like some advice on potential cause of a very irritating exhaust rattle/vibration. I have taken a couple of short videos but looks like the max 1.5MB file size will stop me from uploading them. It happens consistently at about 2000rpm and is coming from the drivers side of the car. Its really noticeable in sports mode when the car is downshifting as that is right at the rev point when the rattle is at its worst. Sounds horrible!
I think its the exhaust and maybe a loose baffle but not sure. Had it into a local OPC who replaced the sports exhaust actuators as they were loose but its still the same. Thought it might be a heat shield but pressing various ones doesn't make a difference. Suspect I'm going to have to get an OPC to strip it down to get to the root cause but it would be good to know if anyone out there has had a similar problem or can offer advice as to what it could be.
Cheers, Andy

I have a similar problem on 997.2 c2s with PSE..... it is a high frequency rattle only on the overrun - e.g. changing down gears or just taking foot off accelerator at higher revs..... OPC said there was something broken in the silencer. Gert at Carnewal in Belgium advised that this is a common problem and that he can repair it. I am just waiting for a trip through Belgium to drop by as i don't want to fork out for a new one or go 3rd party.

Hi,
Yes that sounds the same. I was hoping there would be someone in the UK that could repair it, I have heard of specialists that can cut the silencer open, repair the loose bit and weld it back together again but no idea how to find them. Replacing the silencer with a new one would be the obvious route but they are so expensive. Cheers Andy

Mine is a 997.2 4S Cabrio 2010. Developed this rattle few weeks back. Diagnosed as loose heat shields by Phil Raby , but it’s something else , since they fixed that and its still there. My view its a loose baffle because its 90% happening on overrun 2000-2500 rpm.

Occasionally it remains normal but rattle now getting more frequent.
NB you cannot hear this when car is stationary
Probably will replace back box with bypass - to give sporty exhaust note - but an expense I be happy not to make.

Yes, sounds like the same problem although mine still makes the noise when I rev it stationary on the drive. Also the noise on mine is definitely more from the drivers side rear which is why Im suspecting a loose baffle in the silencer on that side rather than the common one at the back. I have also looked at some of the after market exhaust systems as a way of fixing the problem and getting a better exhaust note, the Fabspeed system looks/sounds great but is really expensive so may have to wait a while longer.... I'll be very interested to know if your removal of the rear common silencer fixes the noise for you. Cheers Andy

Andy, I spoke to Phil Raby this week and the probable next step is to remove the back box and examine with a Boro-scope camera which will identify possible baffle failure. Their tech guy is back next week and we will take a decision based on that discussion.
Will update soon

Andy this forum is not very user friendly …. This is my 4th attempt to answer you
After the last examination. Phil Raby concluded it was not the rear box but the primary silencer on the passenger side- probably a loose baffle. After a lot of debate i decided to order a pair of Dansk Sport silencers ( they only come in pairs) This is not the switchable version. The delivery seems long and i am already waiting over 4 weeks. Ironically after the last examination the offending noise has subsided, and I am not in that big a rush to spend £1100 or so.

So we will see when ever that finally is fitted- your message reminded me to chase them up again
Best regards Huw

Huw, yes, I was just grumbling to myself this evening that its not easy to find things on here! Anyway thanks for the update, am sure that will sort the noise for you and give you a different/better sound in the process. I have considered going down that route as any switchable after market exhaust system seems a bit pointless as they are designed to just provide a great exhaust note without the need to switch it on and off. Let me know how it sounds after you finally get them replaced. Regards, Andy

Found someone 'up north' that could do the repair, Sports & Classic, but at £520 inc VAT for 1 box and need the car for 3 days, a lot more that Carnawal charge for a 2 hour while u wait @ €350 for 1 box, or €500 for both. Unfortunately without any other reason to go to Belgium, the ferry/hotels costs mount up and i have been kicking that can down the road. I have reached out to PCW Exhaust Mods near Milton Keynes - i am hoping they are up for it and are more local - i will let you know. I also have fine cracks on the outside face of both exhausts that need a weld up as well; so given is a 14 year old car with over 90k, and used as a daily driver i should be looking to replace, but they are so damn expensive. I was thinking that picking up a set of used non-PSE boxes as quite cheap on ebay.. a trade off between the rattle and the loss of a decent exhaust sound. Ho hum.

Interesting you mention Sports and Classic as I have already taken the car to them to have the noise looked at, they did find that the passenger side PSE actuator bracket was loose, missing 2 bolts through corrosion and recommended replacing both whilst the bumper was off so I agreed to that as it seemed like a plausible cause of the rattle. Anyway it wasn't and the noise was still the same so I took the car back and they had a listen to it up on the ramp but said it would need more in depth investigation to find the cause. Having just paid £684 for the PSE actuator replacement I wasnt keen on spending more without a known outcome and they didnt get back to me with a quote anyway so I left it and decided to just put up with the occasional annoying noise.
