After much hunting around the internet and Porsche dealers (n.l.a.), I discovered that this part only seems to be available from VW Classic in Germany - I should warn you it's not cheap.
I needed it for a 1979 924 2.0 n.a. but they're stocking it for a Mk1 Polo. It is still a 2.2 uf, 100V capacitor so should work fine - it is the only one now with an inline mounting plate - if you get one with the mounting plate at rightangles the wire is too short.
I assume they're so difficult to find now because later alternators had them built in as a matter of course, rather than being an add-on . . . so manufacturers have stopped making them for 45 year old cars.
