Air-con weight saving???

Ex Skyline

Just wondering how much weight i will save by ditching the aircon installation from the 944. Can anyone put me out of my misery here?? Also, is it an easy job to get it all out? Thanks guys.

Very easy to take out the compressor, which is the heavy bit, but you want an a/c delete bracket to mount the alternator I think

Most of the other bits in the engine bay are light - the condenser & dryer will come out easily. The evaporator is buried under the dash. (i have no idea how much it weighs)

Obviously if the system still works, it will need de-gassing first. If it is working, its worth saving the lines in the engine bay as they are a usual failure point, so someone will want them. They aren't easy to get out though, and don't weigh a lot.

I would make an educated guess at 12 to 16kg, and 85% of that comes from the A/C Compressor (below the alternator) plus A/C Rad in the front panel (incl 1kg of dead flies). All the other components (condenser, pipes x 2, HVAC Rad in dash) are light alloy components.
The heavy parts are as easily removed as the light one are difficult.
Maybe some-one will have an exact answer.

IMHO having removed most of the A/C bits myself the greatest 'saving' is on cooling effect direct to the radiator.

Yes, you will save weight by removing the compressor and condensor - difficult job though and as Ed rightly points out, you'll need a different mounting bracket AND a different alternator belt AND a different cowling for the back of the alternator which dumps the hot air.

It's a lot of hassle for not much gain........

If you want to save lots of weight quickly, remove all the original seats (inc rear seat belts) and replace the front ones with motorsport bucket seats - reckon you'll save 40-50kg for a lot less hassle !

Is it a working system ?

If you remove the whole system you must take your car's dash of.Inside the heater/AC "package" is also some parts for AC only. I suppose the whole package is max 10-12KG though. Here's some pic's of the system i have rebuilt

Cowling sucks in cool air. There should be a hose connected to it, which leads to the front of car.
