There is. Talk to "Coolit" Nr Dorchester, Dorset, who know these systems very well. Five years ago they rebuilt my compressor and regassed with something different, and despite not being used in the winter (run up once a month, including running the aircon), it has performed faultlessly ever since. Cost me £6-700 ish then... but as I say, that was five years ago. BTW, I know they are not near Peterborough, but if yoy take their advice, go with a local who's advice matches theirs... unless of course you want a weekend in the west country (great roads, Poole Quay event coming up[

Rubbish. My indie did an R34a conversion for about £80 a couple of years ago and i've had a few recharges carried out since then. Not sure exactly what's involved but there is certainly no need for the replacement of any major components of the system, just seals and connectors I think. After seeing to a leaky condensor my A/C works fine now, as good as any modern car i've been in.

Hi guys. Slowly working through the small jobs on my 1988 Turbo. I am now confident the HVAC unit is more or less tip top after a few little fixes. I am now thinking it is time to get the aircon sorted. A couple of garages I have approached have breatehed through their teeth and said "It's gonna cost you mate"! They have said basically they will have to upgrade the compressor and condensor and pretty much everything else and it will be around £1500!! This would be because obviously we can't use R12 anymore. I have however heard on the grapevine there is a replacement gas that you can use. I have also heard it is not quite as good as R12 but hey it's better than £1500, which is quite frankly not an option. Does anyone know what the gas is and if so anyone in the Peterborough area who can do it. Thanks in advance guys. Heres looking forward to an icey summer.

If your system has been empty for any period of time then parts will need replacing because the gas keeps them lubricated. Some of these can be very expensive (hence your quotes). There are legal R12 compatible gases out there that require no conversion whatsoever and work perfectly - I used www.airconone.co.uk in Herts but I think he has packed in. Most places will always recommend the R134a as that is what 99% of the market use these days
