Hi

Can anyone advise me whether the well documented engine problems on the 996 have carried over to the 997? I am looking to get my first 911 and thought I might be able to afford a Gen 1 997 4S Cab (budget up to £30k if anyone knows a a good one) Huge Porsche lover (have had Boxsters, Panamera, Cayennes) but not too mechanically minded...!

Also being new to Suffolk are there any Porsches specialist car sale places in Suffolk or Norfolk? Many thanks

Andy,

Assuming you’re referring to IMS bearing and bore scoring/D-chunking issues then unfortunately the same applies to the Gen1 997, although later versions I believe had a more robust IMS bearing. Although these issue undoubtedly have been overplayed by internet chatter they do exist, and if you’re contemplating purchasing a 997.1 it would be wise to check its maintenance history (clutch and IMS bearing replacement?) and to get a thorough PPI from a reputable source to include a borescope examination.

These issues were addressed on the Gen2 997 with the elimination of the IMS and the use of more robust Alusil cylinder blocks and included other design improvements, so if you have any concerns and your budget allows this would be a safer bet.
