A very close call!

Just got in from a quick shakedown run after sorting a leaky coolant temp thermostat and had the car on the drive, running with the bonnet up. All dry as a bone coolant wise so that was good, but could hear a whooshing noise like someone blowing through a straw and could smell fuel!

Shut the car off and the 3rd injector back was leaking fuel onto the rail-retaining bolt, eek.

Doesn't bear thinking about what might have happened had I gone for a longer run :(

I'll remove the fuel rail and replace all the injector seals but is there anything else I need to check while I'm in there?

There is a seller on Ebay who does the for a tenner for the 4 kits including the small filters which are well worth changing. Use a small bit of rubber grease to put the rail back on and make sure the U shaped clips are all seated or they will leak again. Seat all the injectors in the head first and then offer the top rail up. A bit of a faff lining them up but with the grease they will slide in. Open the pintle slightly when you clean them with your finger nail and give them a blwo through with some carb cleaner back up them as not to force the crap in them back down. Do that and then change the filters,

Cheers Alasdair, have emailed the seller to check I'm looking at the right kit.

What I can't understand is that the fuel rail hasn't been off for over 2 years, just seems a bit random to have suddenly occurred.

Just an update on this. I never ordered the replacement seals but did get a replacement fuel rail from Alasdair.

Fuel rail had cracked slightly along the weld for the support stanchion.

I know sone of the early cars have a problem with the rail cracking where the feed goes in, slightly later but still square dash, one have that bit reinforced!
