A question for Cabrio owners

Does anyone with a soft top 944 keep it outside or is the consensus that they really need to be garaged - ie are the hoods good enough for the cars to live out doors or do they get a bit damp if they do ?

Hi Jon

Mine lives outside, I would love to put it away but I don't have a choice, it does have some super hi-tech cover (which I have now learnt is complete nonsense!) but when its cold the exterior of the car does get damp under the cover. I take the cover off whenever it is windy or on a sunny day and also open the doors to blow through the interior, the inside can get a little damp (condensation on the interior of the windscreen) due to the temperature differential not due to any leaks from the roof.

Overall I would say that they are fine to live outside but shouldn't be too neglected, probably true of all variants really.

Regards

Joss

Just been to my Saab, which I now keep for the dog and taking the Christmas tree to the dump, and that has far more condensation on the windscreen than the 944. I don't look after the Saab very well anymore and definitely don't 'air' it as I do the Porsche, so I must assume that the 'damp' in the convertible can't be worse than in a hardtop

mine lives in the garage, and is their for 5 months of the year solid (winter) without taking her out. i do turn her over just to check things are fine and dandy.

its stored at the moment with the roof and windows down and the boot open (she's got a battery conditioner connected) so the interior gets a proper airing. started her on sat after sitting for a good few months and turned over good and fast on its first turn of the key.

if i didn't have garage or a cover, then it'd be really filthy after a week even without driving it as a- its black, and b- i live a minutes walk from the sea front and the amount of sand that blows here would cover the car completely. very lucky to have a useable garage to put her in.

Thanks for the replies folks - I ask as my girlfriend is very taken with them and has been considering getting one. However she does not have a garage and has been concerned that living outside the hood will either leak or perish excessively but I would imagine the hoods are pretty robust and hard wearing things ?

Treating it helps.

My hood was replaced by a PO about 6 years ago and has never leaked in the three years I have had the car, it fits really well and the plastic back window is in really good nick, mind you it is a mohair job and I have the invoice stating about £1k. All the rubbers are original though and they are fine, plus it doesn't let any water in, even when raining a lot and driving in excess of 70mph!

Renovo also do the shampoo for cleaning the hood before, and renovator to restore the colour before re-proofing. Did mine last year, took a while but really made the hood look good. Beware though - the restorer is very liquid and gets everywhere and is a swine to remove from the bodywork once it's dry. Also do not fold the hood for at least 24 hours after resoring and proofing, or you will get whitish crease marks (guess how I know!!).
