A question about Porsche Warranty

My car went in to the dealer yesterday to have a noisey/rattley front suspension investigated.

It has Porsche warranty.

They diagnosed that the lower left hand control arm had significant wear and was causing the problem I was hearing! All good I thought, but I was then told that it was normal wear and tear and it would not be covered under the warranty scheme!!!

Now this begs my question - what is the real need for extended warranty programmes?

Surely, on a car which is close to 6 yrs old, this 'normal wear and tear' excuse/response can cover all items?

Your thoughts and experience is welcome on this, because I'm left feeling slightly miffed!

Under the terms of the warrenty suspension bushes are not specifically excluded (just read my booklet exclusions) BUT the old "fair wear and tear" clause is always an insurance conpany's get out of jail card. Basically if it moves or can be proven that its been abused or there are any non standard modifications its not covered.
 
Unfortunately Dan, the extended warranty is an insurance policy and therefore you're in the hands of the insurer (and their exclusions) when it comes to a claim. You should certainly argue your case with the PC involved, particularly since it's only happened on one side of the car (a substandard bush?), but I wouldn't hold your breath. If you're having additional work done by them, eg a service, you might get a discount; and don't forget that if you're a PCGB Member, you're entitled to a 10% discount on any parts used. Jeff
 
I had the same experience about 2 years ago and it coincided with the MOT and so I had the situation where the car had just that day at the OPC passed the MOT, I was due to renew the extended warranty and yet they said it was ok to pass MOT but failed on the amount of wear for the warranty renewal! This rather beggared my belief to say the least and they wanted to charge me for a new steering arm and full alignment! As I expressed my reluctance and I also used the argument of a substandard original factory fitted part in addition since I was about to pay for two years warranty which I was then thinking I would do without they came back with the offer of if I paid for the arm and two years warranty as planned then they would pay the rest as good will. Result bill reduced from £600 to £60 for a steering arm and full alignment with printout.[;)] I must say that I have been dealing with the Sheffield OPC since 2005 and so I do have some history with them also my son has been a customer and will be again so that will have helped. Try a discussion with the service head of department they may actually allow some good will if you bought the car from them.

That sounds like very light use to me but the insurers will probably say that it could have been due to a pothole impact and, given the parlous state of our roads, you can't really argue with that. Unfortunately, if this was the case then it probably didn't happen on "your watch", so you can't even claim from the responsible local authority. Jeff

I agree with that sentiment 31k and 6 years is not that long in the life of a car. But, it would probably cost you more in time, energy and maybe money trying to prove parts not fit for purpose. Interestingly, my front suspension starts to make squeaky rubber noises after driving in the wet. First registered the problem at 2 years and 2 months old. But, it has passed 2 MoTs and 2 OPCs can't find any problems. As I have the official extended warranty until October 2013, I will be monitoring the situation closely.
