A Puzzle for Friday, or a puzzle for life?

Still rescinds instantly with some silicone spray into belt area, which tells me it can't possibly be bearing noise, could it?

Can you be more directed with that silicone spray? Put a pipe on the end of the can and see where precisely you need to squirt it to make the noise go away. The type of noise (bearing/metallic) means I'm not entirely convinced it is belt noise.

Did you offer a delivery option with that mars bar? If you post it to me First Class then I'll claim the stamp as the other part of the prize ...

Oli.

Lol, Mar Bar in the post to Oli towers. Sure it should arrive.............

Thanks guys. So yesterday have tightened another bit. Have about 10mm deflection. Now is that from level or total? Eg. 5mm up and down giving 10mm from top and bottom deflected points, or 10mm away from level? Noise was there this morning, its akin to 2 ball bearings clanking together, a bit like the old desk ornament with 5 metal balls that swings away. Noise follows sometimes random but sometimes rhythmic pattern. Always goes away after 5 mins or instantly after spraying silicone spray. Most effective area is spraying down on to top of AC compressor pulley/vertical area of belt type of place. But generally spraying the stuff anywhere near any point of the belt does the trick.

The AC compressor is reconditioned and spins serenely smooth with zero noise. The alternator is reconditioned and spins freely with a very small whirring sound, but nothing bad or grumbly. The crank pulley is brand new. Belts seem to run nice and true although there is a VERY small hint that crank pulley has the tiniest wobble but can't be 100% sure. The noise is very definitely worse running with a slack belt. I now have the belt pretty tight and this hasn't 100% cured it. It only happens on cold start up.

I have not tried running without the PS pump to rule it out, though noise seems very much concentrated on alternator area. I've had about 8 different alternators over the years and 3 different AC compressors and the noise hasn't ever really gone away. I have never tried a brand new alternator. Current one from a chap on ebay who sells re-conditioned units. Would assume this would include new bearings but can't be sure. Sorely tempted to get a brand new alternator just to rule it out but can't help thinking it won't.

I wish the undertrays were quick release.

I wish the alternator was quick release.

This is annoying me just a tad!

Argh

Stuart

Have you tried running it with the belt off? Belt off and still noisy would eliminate the alternator, a/c compressor and the belt from the investigation entirely.

Yes, no belt, no noise. Been quiet a few days now. Crossing fingers about only option left!

Cheers

Stuart
