Looked in the techie bit but so much is miles out of date so thought I'd put it on here. How long do top mounts last in "normal" road driving? Has anyone ever had to have them changed. 76k miles and about to change shocks. Should I consider having top mounts changed at the same time and maybe springs, as well as sundry bits and pieces??

I would replace the top mounts at the same time.
They are rubber encased and it’s the usual story with any rubber mountings where the age has to be considered along with usage and mileage. Not all miles would be equal so it is difficult to go by that alone. Bearings on them do not seem to fail but most do it as not worth skimping on such a small part.
The front top mounts seem to be the ones to fail, some say due to the turning/leaning force the steering lock puts on those compared with rears.
Comparatively cheap cost of parts compared with the rest of the suspension, so I would say it’s a must unless you know the top mounts were recently replaced.
Need to get the same thing done myself!

Agreed … I reckon that it’s a no-brainer to replace those elastomeric components on a car that’s more than 10-years old and at 76k miles Martin, especially since the suspension’s being dismantled anyway to replace the springs and dampers.
