Hi all,
Been lurking a bit as picked up a 2005 997.1 a few weeks ago. First Porsche; loving it! Happy to be here.

Hunting on the web to answer a question regarding engine oil but coming away more and more confused.

Some background on the car and its use: Last major service completed in 2020 by RSJ at 74.8k miles. Bought car on 76.8k and driven to current 78k. Bore scope shows no issues just an FYI.

Daily driver, I will drive it hard once oil up to temp where able! Live in UK so no -25c. Not garaged.

I’ve read the manual re viscosity and seems that Mobil 1 is the preferred from internet opinion. Having read through various forums, advice ranges from "chuck in whatever brand you want” to "as engine is worn, use 5w50”.

I would assume, based on what I have read and based on the cars mileage 0w40 is the way to go? My thinking (and I’m not overly mechanically minded) is 0w to get things coated quickly when cold. If a 0w50 is a thing would this be recommended to get it to cling better when up to temp?

Finally, as the last oil used is unknown, should I top up with new oil even if potentially different viscosity and brand or should I get an oil and filter change now?

Many thanks in advance for any help!

Stu.

Had my 997-1 2S manual for 12 years. I ensure the oil is changed every year and follow OPC service guidelines fully. However, some years ago I picked up on a recco. for Millers Nanotech oil. The company MD had a 997 and had used this to good results (after some development work). It’s EE nanodrive, 5-40. Bought directly from the UK business, on line. Car runs very well on it, no issues. 10L are roughly 50% of OPC price for Mob 1 at last service. (part no. 7806-5L)
All evidence I can find suggests it’s good for this engine, especially older, higher miles examples. Very happy with it. My car runs clean rear tail pipes, 60k miles. Bore scope check performed several years ago, all clear.
Good luck!

Thanks for the info will check it out. Is it ok to add this to potentially different viscosity and brand?

Hi Stuart,

There shouldn’t be a problem adding oil from a different brand, although ideally I suppose the viscosity rating should be the same.

If you’re looking for advice on all things oil I suggest that you contact Opie Oils who should be able to answer your questions, as well as being able to supply different brands, including Millers [they may still offer a Club discount].

Most specialists I have asked are using Mobil 3000 5w40 A40 in the 997 Carreras, but the Millers NT+ is probably the better oil (just dearer) and I believe is recommended by Hartech. Regardless of oil brand I would change it yearly at a minimum, and if you track the car, change it after a track day.
Oil dilution (and overheating causing cylinder distortion) is the enemy to these engines so using Millers NT + and leaving it there for 20,000 miles would lose the benefit of the highest grade oils.
If you want to keep an eye on things oil analysis is well worth the relative small cost when the oil is changed.
Hope that helps and you are enjoying your 997.

+1 for Millers NanoDrive, changed regularly.
