993 Handling...

Hi all,

Looking to upgrade from my 90/H 964 C4 to a 993 and cant cant any 993 C4's within my budget so I will probably have to settle for a C2 Coupe or Cabriolet.

I use the car most of the time around town or fast A roads and some motorways and am used to the handling and stability of the C4 and was hoping someone could offer some unbiased advice on day to day use.

I do ENJOY the car and the handling is predictable with the back end coming out in an orderley fashion but I am not sure the 993 C2 would be as predictable.

Had a bad experience last year and wrote of my 968 Cabriolet Tiptronic due to the rear end coming out in the wet so I am now a little cautious.

Any advice or comments would be gratfully received and looking forward to moving registers........

If anyone has a 993 to sell or wants a good 964 C4 then let me know.

Many thanks,

Rob

One of the most predictable 911 i ve ever driven, especially progressive in the wet ,biggest problem is realising how quickly u can go safely and still allow for other drivers on a public road!

Thanks Vic,

Do you think, coming from a 964 C4 to a 993 C2 (and not being a professional driver) I would have the tendancy to overcook it?

Anything I should know about changes in the model during its lifetime or buying one?

Cheers,

Rob

Guess you ll find the handling more progressive and marginally softer all round , 4 or 2 wheel drive is a personal preference ,i ve always stuck with 2 ,though was tempted by 4 at one time think Porsches under pressure understeer quite enough and rear weight etc give great traction...........changes mainly pre or post varioram.........its not just the BHP increase but the delivery is that much better...............with a bit of luck mileage not fundamental but best genuine fsh car u can find usually gets u the best deal.Drive a smany as u can to get feel should cost a little less to run than ur 964,service ints and no tappet adjustment helping.
Good luck hope u find a goody theres plenty around at good prices .

Over the past few years i have had a number of 964 and 993 derivative cars, mainly turbo or RS and i feel i can safely say that the 993 models with their "Multi-link"rear suspension are the more user friendly and forgiving in both general day to day use and also if you progress to fast track work.
My particular preference would always be for rear wheel drive only models since they do not tend to suffer quite so badly from the C4 "understeer"traits and if track work is your interest then a good 993C2 will be a good choice but also make an excellent car for the road.
Regards
John

Can someone provide a list of these C4 "understeer traits" please ?

Beershark - I have a C4 which I think handles surperbly. Have lost the back end once on a wet corner when I had my foot flat to the floor very early rather than waiting for the corner to open up - not too sure what a C2 would have done here .... As for the understeer, can't say I've really noticed, but let's see what the list is !

Just a tendency to plough on.......compared to a C2. Can be partially cancelled out by fitting strut brace and dialling in a tad more camber on the front wheels.
