993 Glovebox refuses to shut

Hi Guys
I have had my 993 now for 17 years and the glovebox has only ever been used occasionally.
Last week I decided to get the Handbook and Service wallet out. Could I close the glovebox afterwards? No.
Using the key didn't make any difference. The "U" shaped Clip would not click the catch.
The problem is if the door is left open, the glovebox light stays on and drains the battery. So I have had to wedge it shut, not pretty!
Anybody experienced this before?
 
The only time I've ever had a problem is when a pen, I-pod cable or something similar fell into the groove at the bottom of the door when opened and then stopped it from closing fully so the catch didn't get a chance to work. This does give the impression of the catch not working. It all comes apart quite easily so should be easy to fault find if it's not this.
