993 flywheel

My 1997 993 C2S is fitted with a 'dual mass flywheel' It sound like this flywheel has another function, apart from its obvious one. What is a 'dual mass flywheel' and what is the difference between this and an ordinary flywheel.?

just to add to Maurices description ... main reason for its use is that its damping action reduces drivetrain harshness (helps to reduce drivetrain vibration particularly when the engine is at low speed and at idle).
Normal flywheels trade-off the ability to dampen the unavoidable variations in crankshaft rotational speed which occur at the point of combustion for each cylinder - against - the slewing of engine response that naturally occurs with larger flywheels.
In theory at least, a DMF performs this balancing act a little better.

I have been pondering on this since I got the info from Maurice. I am beginning to think that going to the expense of a new DMF instead of the light weight rs flywheel on offer is going to be the way to go. I have been seeing quite a few negative references to the DMF, but mine has given no trouble since I have had the car. Unless the severe judder I get from the clutch when hot and reversing is a DMF problem.

The Downside of a Single Mass fly wheel is as described above, however you should also consider the upside:-
Much improoved Engine response,both up the revs and back down. This enables the engine to "free up" giving better performance and quicker gear changes.!!!
However I must concede that these benifits are probably more usefull for track use where the additional transmission noise within the car may not be an issue.
If your car is purley for road use, where comfort is primary, then I would probably recommend you stay with your "Dual Mass",which will undoubtably be more compliant.

Thanks John, that was really useful info.
-- and it has finally stopped me dithering, I am going for the RS flywheel and clutch combo. Together with the shiney new exhaust system it should put a grin on my face for a long time to come. I will try not to think of the cost, it might affect the grin.

When my clutch started to go, reverse juddering is one of the signs! I to looked at the RS flywheel but decided that as I would be driving mainly on the road the added performance against extra noise was not something I was prepared to trade.

Although to be truthful the final decision was made for me as 9M did not have one in stock and I was looking for a quick turnaround. Have to admit that once the new clutch went in, got the light gearchange back.
 
noise is minor prob.

stalling when cold is the main one - played with the ISV and now sorted

pros are SO much more than cons with single mass FW
