993 engine fanbelt monitor light has appeared

After a few weeks' non-driving (my car is on a conditioner) went to start her this morning. Went through the usual 'start sequence' and turned the key to switch on - to experience the sound (rapid ratchet clicking) and the red engine fanbelt monitor light coming on. There was no indication of any engine firing up activity.

The handbook says 'fanbelt broken' when this light appears - but it isn't. Other information suggests there is a fanbelt sensor that will have failed.

Does anyone have a similar experience? And what was the solution?

All thoughts gratefully received.

Cheers, John

🤔 Starter motor jammed.
  1. Repeated “clicking” sounds usually indicate a dead battery. But a faulty solenoid that fails to make adequate electrical contact inside can also produce this tell-tale sound causing the battery to have low voltage unable to provide enough power to start your engine.

Many thanks Stirls and T911UK - the battery had lost some of its charge (even though a C-tech conditioner was in situ) and there wasn't sufficient 'oomph' for the starter motor to engage. Probably time to replace both, as over 10 years old.

Hi John, had similar experience late last year on my '96 C4S . I had never noticed the fanbelt monitor light before but on check the engine bay could see the sensor wheel had disintegrated leaving only the bearing rattling on the belt. Fairly easy fix with new sensor costing about ÂŁ99.00. I am not blessed with hands that can do these things but any friendly mechanic can change the unit easily. Hope that helps . all the best. Hi John - thanks for your message. So far, at least, a battery re-charge appears to have solved the problem, but I have a feeling that a new battery will be required (PC Edinburgh doing a check next week). Cheers, John D
