993 Creaking screen

I believe this has all been discussed before but I cannot find the thread.
My C2S screen creaks when the car is cold, or anyway it's worse when cold.
I seem to have read that there is a cure-or two. Could anybody point me in the right direction please.

I take mine to OPC who remove screens, put a silicone tape around and refit. Seems to cure it for a year or so. Known issue with 993s. I,m sure theres a thread somewhere..........

Thanks Phil. This seems to be the case with most people. I need a new screen in any case, so will make sure it is fitted properly with the tape. I take it this is the sealing tape that goes around the outside of the screen and has a Porsche number albeit a 996 number. '996-541-903-00. It will in fact keep the screen from being mounted touching the surrounding body at any point. I would imagine it could be this non centralised mounting that causes the problem for most people.

Yes, I think it is possible to do it without removing the screen (but I am not sure whether that is viewed as a complete solution) . They remove the windscreen rubber, line the aperture with teflon tape and then refit. I have seen a thread in the past where people have solved the problem by lubricating the windscreen rubber using a variety of products from gool old vaseline and WD40 to Pedros Ice Wax, which I think is a chain lube used for bicycles (purchased at your cycle store). I think you squirt the lube under the rubber lip and work it around using your fingers. This allows the rubber to move more easily as the aperture flexes.

Don't confuse the teflon tape with the cord that one can get. The teflon tape sticks on the painetd metal of the windscreen surround and is contacted by the furry underside of the black outer rubber sealing strip. The cord, which is made of a very soft slippery rubber and is a bit like a washing line (approx 4mm diameter), is shoved into the gap between the edge of the screen and the painted surround and is, once fitted, completely hidden by the outer rubber sealing strip. I had my screen removed and refitted recently after Autoglass had fitted a new one a few months earlier and removed and didn't replace the Teflon tape - it creaked like mad and drove me nuts. The refitters used the teflon tape and it still creaked when I picked the car up. They did though have some of the cord (which I think is really for 996s) and after peeling back the outer rubber seal to stick that in the gap (a 3 minute job) the creaking was banished. I, like others, used to think that the Teflon tape was the key (as before Autoglass got their mitts on the car it was creak free), but in my recent experience the tape alone isn't - you need the cord too.

I hope this helps.

Must admit had my screen replaced 2 yr ago by Bill Heaney the NE Porsche approved repair ctr who use a tape as described above. Upon collection it still squeaked, took it back they re-laid the tape and 2 yr on no probs, Its probably down to how well the tape is laid in the 1st place. By the way, be aware that I have been informed that Vaseline perishes rubber due to it containing Sylicone or something like that. I was advised by a polymer specialist to steer clear!

Yes Mike, I seem to recall someone raising a concern about the impact of vaseline on the rubber. I think this is why someone recommended Pedros Ice Wax but I am not sure.

a lot of 993 rust under the rubber, where it chaffs through the paint.Does not hurt to put a coat of lube under the rubber, teflon or not.
In our racers we fit the 964 screen and rubber. No more glueing of screens in and out,no squeaks,No cut marks from window fitters, also watch your chasiss number which can get cut off as they cut the old screen out with said cheese wire, has happend a few times to some nice 993rs.

Is the 964 screen a perfect fit for road use and does it not affect body stiffness by not having the screen glued in.
Happy Christmas to all and a fantastic 2007 in your Porsche's.
John.
And thanks for all the contributions.

They fit perfectly.
No effect on rigidity, the roof structure has not changed much in 30 odd years.Which is part of the problem the rest of the chassis has benn stiffened over the time, especially the 993.
