991.1 C4 - Starting Problem

Hi All,
I used my C4 the other night for a number of local trips. On one occasion, I parked the car but when I went back to it 5 minutes later, the car cranked well but wouldn’t start.
There were no codes, no CEL and an hour later the car started as normal. It’s been fine since but could be embarrassing if it happens in traffic. Anybody had anything similar?

 
Mine was taking longer than usual to crank before it fired but it did always start. The diagnosis was a failing fuel pump and was replaced under warranty, problem solved.
 
Check the usual i.e. fuel delivery, coil packs etc. A PIWIS readout should nail any potential defect.

Thanks Clive. As it’s only happened once I’ll try to recreate the conditions and see if I can get it to happen again so I can attempt a fault finding session.

Apart from PIWIS, can anyone recommend a Porsche specific code reader?

There were no error codes showing which made diagnosis difficult. It also refused to do it when it at the OPC, in the end I recorded short videos of the start process when it took a long while to fire which then persuaded the OPC to investigate and replace the fuel pump.
 
Still no resolution on this. I obtained the vehicle build sheet and it had the VTS preparation (just the cable I believe) but no VTS. Other than that, if the immobiliser was playing up, am I correct in thinking that the car wouldn’t crank?

I searched a few sites and found others have had the problem before and that it might be caused by a crankshaft position sensor spacing issue. When I changed the sensor (for a later type), I noticed that there was no spacer shim present on my car - it’s a very early C4 that was used by Porsche UK in the model launch. Does anyone know the spacer thickness or whether it can be purchased? I couldn’t find it listed anywhere.
