Spied again: 2008 Porsche Boxster face-lift

Almost a year ago, spy photographers spotted an updated Porsche Boxster prototype undergoing some winter testing, but the car has been kept under wraps for the past 12 months. But today, spy photographers captured the first image of the new Boxster without any cover.

The new car features a redesigned front bumper with LED daylight driving lights. The front fascia has a lower, more flowing shape and includes revised headlights and a new bumper.

Thanks to some computer work, the few strips of tape covering the rear lights have been removed and reveal the new shape of the LED taillights.

Details on the car's technical and interior changes remain unclear, but it is believed that the Boxster's engines will be updated with direct injection. The new Porsche Boxster is expected to launch in 2008 replacing the 2004 facelift

The narrative describes the 2004 model (2005 actually) as a 'facelift'. This was in fact a new model - 986>987.

The pictures show a mild mid-life 'facelift' of the 987. It's the next generation model (988?) from 2010 that will incorporate more radical changes, and possibly look more like a small Carrera GT.

So what? The genetic make up of the 997 is over 40 years old. The current 911 looks great and is a class leading drive thanks to all those increments and occasional bigger steps.

You think there'll be an R8 derivative in 2048?

The competition is heating up, porsche need to step up their game.
If we can barely tell the difference between these minor facelifts
the average punter won't be able to, so why bother?

Porsche may be the most profitable car company in the world but a lot of that profitability
was from their success in the financial markets.
Strip that away and the picture isn't as rosey.

Let's see some inspired design changes for a change.

OOOOOhhh! Guess who just got a call from an OPC asking if one would like to guarantee an early face-lift 987 by parting with a deposit today for a car expected at an OPC near you sometime in March 2009 (Two Thousand & Nine)

Perhaps they are expecting demand by then to be very high like way back in 1996-97 [&o]

It would be nice if they did something in the same vein as 964 to 993. What are Porsche afraid of? I suppose if they keep selling they maximise profits by minimising production costs between models. It is getting a bit tedious now though and will be more anti-Porsche amunition for JC. I can understand Porsche not wanting to mess with the 911 too much due to the whole 'its a 911' thing, but with the Boxster and Cayman they have an opportunity to really mix it up with the big boys on the styling front. Having said that i'd hate to see them to go too far the other way - the R8 is nice looking but a bit too much for me, i'd be embarrassed driving it, and in 5yrs time it'll just look cheesy, whereas the Boxster will be like a white shirt - a classic that will never be out of fashion.

White shirts may never be out of fashion but sometimes a splash of colour wouldn't go amiss especially as there are so many people out there who think one Boxster MY is no different what so ever to say the later face lift era. Even the jump from 986 to 987 left many convinced it was still basically the same car as 1996! [&o]

Hi Scott,

Excellent in another 5 years I would love to have the cheesy car (R8) at a fraction of the price, I dont't think I would be embarrassed, you have got to take your hat off to Audi to produce such a machine.

At present management has a white shirt in the garage (MY 2000) 2.7 size, I agree with you the original Boxster shape will never go out of fashion a bit like the true 911. I have got a 911 3.2 (MY 1989) no spoilers, what type of shirt would that be? Feels very confortable when I drive it.

The 997 is the best looking and balanced , dare I say 911, since 1989, would look ok next to my real 911 but I would prefer the R8, sorry.

Iain me thinks there is more chance of either one of us winning the lotto than Porsche offering this look or colour as standard [&o] Even Porsche could do with a good kick up the designers ar$$$$e sometimes []

if you take the plates off an original boxter and said it was a brand new model your avaerage punter would believe you, which i think is a good thing.
its one of the reasons your investment keeps its value so well.
