986 Boxster S - best value Porsche?

Interesting - I did feel there was a lot of car around me. It felt particularly wide, although that could well have been unfamiliarity and nervousness about it not being my car!ORIGINAL: edh
I'm surprised you felt it was big - mine feels very go-kart like. Parked next to the 944 there's not a lot in it.

Head gaskets
Tappets
Cam chains
IMS chain
Worn tensioners
Variocam pads (a cert)
IMS
Oil leaks
Blocked strainer
Worn rings
Worn pistons
Worn big ends
Worn thrust bearings
Water pump
The list will go on and on. The quality of the alloy used is also very poor compared to the old aircooled cars.
I have had to replace these all in the 996 engine that I have which had done 130k.
They really are sh!t engines. All the talk about them being any good at all is complete crap. From all I have seen of the cars and talking to other folk, they will all fail spectacularly at some point, it is just a matter of time, the hand grenade pin will always be teetering on the edge.
I wouldn't even entertain another one after my experience of them.
IMS guardians are one thing but it is all the other things that can fail as well and will do.
They are very cheap fo a reason. The people who are buying the cars are also buying cars due to the Porsche badge and the majority cannot afford to service them properly and repair them properly as well, some due to the high labour rate, some due to the parts price.

Brake disks rot as well when left to sit and if your car sits for any length of time will not clean up. They may look fine on the outside but the insides rot particularly well.
Brake pipes always rot between the flexi and caliper
Radiators and air con condensors need kept very clean of leaves and debris or else you will be looking at changing these often.
I could go on.....

life's too short to worry about all the doom & gloom. I'm going to enjoy the car, and if the worst happens I will only be a couple of grand down as I'm sure theres plenty of value in the rest of the car.
That's only a couple of year's depreciation on most cars, so if it survives until 2016 I'm in profit

The ims guardian would also warn of any other worn / failing metal bits in the engine, so might not be a bad idea anyway.

is unlikely to have any rarity or classic value, so enjoy it while it works!

of course that's what they would have said about Mk 1 or Mk 2 escorts, or minis etc... Has there ever been a Porsche that hasn't become a classic given enough time? even the once unloved 914 fetches good money now. Even dare I say the 944/924 is creeping in there. Not that I care much whether the Boxster does or doesn't TBH.
High production volumes don't mean that lots will survive. If they all implode or rust there won't be many left...how many Cortinas or Sierras, or even early Mondeos do you see on the roads these days?
