981S - disc wear advice needed

Hi folks - first time poster here, looking for some advice on brake disc wear. We picked up a 981 Cayman S back in February from an OPC - it had 25k miles and in lovely condition. It is now in the workshop at Porsche Swindon for its 12-year service, and they have found that the front brake discs are worn down to 26.1mm, so 0.1mm off the limit - obviously they now need replacing.

I gather that discs have to be 26.6mm to pass the 111-point check (at Porsche Swindon at least). Assuming they were right on that limit when we bought the car, is it a reasonable expectation for them to wear another 0.5mm in the 6k miles (no trackdays, mainly b-roads and motorways) we've done since February? Any advice / input very gratefully received!

That does sound a rather excessive wear rate to me. Sometimes the 111-point checks aren’t as thorough as you should expect, so it’s possible that the technician didn’t bother to check the exact disc thicknesses during the check. Unfortunately it’s something that’s difficult to prove, but I think your best bet is to challenge the dealer on that point. I’m sure that you’ll meet some resistance, but as a newer customer they may well offer a price reduction as a good-will gesture.

Agree, looks excessive wear for the mileage.

Suggest ask the supplying OPC for a copy of the full 111 point check record with the recorded disc dimensions and take it from there.

My 981S is 13 years old and has done 45k miles including two recent European road trips and I have just had to replace the front discs and pads. They should last longer than 31k miles. The 111 point health check should contain the disc thickness as my report did when I bought the car.

Thanks fellas - I appreciate the sanity checks! I've received the 111-point check report - it says that the discs passed a 1.4mm maximum wear check, but nothing more specific. I've asked for the recorded measurements so will see what they come back with.

Just got the disc measurements back from the OPC - fronts were measured at 26.8mm at 25k miles in February, now they measure 26.1mm at 31k miles. Something seems amiss to me but at least I can have the conversation with the OPC tomorrow. Thanks again for the replies!

The original disc thickness will have been 28mm, so pro rata you could expect them to be down to about 26.5mm during your 6k miles, but it’s difficult to see where the additional 0.4mm of wear has come from given your described use. However previous wear will be down to how and where the car’s been driven and you could speculate that the wear-rate may increase as the disc gets thinner.?

Has the dealer made any comment about the current brake pad thicknesses? I assume that they’re still within spec? With new discs I’m sure that they’ll want to change them too, so more expense!

Good luck with your conversation tomorrow!

Jeff

Thanks Jeff! Porsche Swindon said that the pads are 0.5mm off the limit so yep new pads are needed as well.

I'd say that car was driven pretty hard in a previous life. As an example, my GTS 4.0 has 31k on the clock and I still have 6mm of brake pad left on them. I believe that Porsche recommend changing pads at 2.5-3mm.

If fitting new discs, ALWAYS fit new pads. Refitting old pads which will have an existing wear profile will start an uneven wear profile on the new discs, reducing efficiency and life.

Sound advice above.
I changed my front pads on my 987.2 at 60K miles (originals worn down to 4mm) with a full kit from Design911.
Braking was great, MoT man happy, advisory on inner face corrosion.

Did the rears due to wear 15k miles later, pads down to 3mm so quite even front/back wear, but I drive gently.

Fronts due at 92K due to corrosion again, pads less than 1/2 down.

Doing the brake refresh (pads/discs/sensors) must be the simplest job on a 987 and £250 for the fronts.
