981 alarm going off

Good to hear that your persistence has paid off Keith.

I suspect that the 'B' version is just a later (updated) component.

The casing does have another set of numbers which looks like a date code.

My car be a 2012 model, the date code on my failed unit seems to be 2011.

The one I received today is 2009.

I was hoping that it was possible to check the voltage output of the built-in rechargeable battery via the three prongs that connects to the loom multi-plug just to check its condition but its not possible to do so.

Fingers crossed that now its connected (as I don't know how long its been removed from the vehicle it came from) that it will now recharge/discharge.

Anyway, £17.50 (postage was £3 so really it only cost £14.50) is much kinder to the pocket than £142 for a new one.

 
Thanks to this thread, I have diagnosed the same fault in my 2013 981 C S. The alarm had been going off very occasionally randomly when locked, but more recently I had no siren (other then the "chirrup" you referred to) but flashing indicators frequently. No beep when I locked, so I suspected the issue might not be a door / boot sensor.

I opened the siren unit with a chisel and the "vice of knowledge". I don't have the "green death" quite as badly as your unit, but it's clearly corroded. Out of interest, the battery is still reading exactly 5v. Waiting on a part from a broken Skoda for £20 delivered...

Since I joined the MG Owners Club when starting to restore my MG BGT I think forums threads for these sort of things are a wealth of knowledge to be accessed by other owners.

Now the MG B is very simple both mechanically and electrically.

But the Boxster is a quite different animal.

Even when I took the 981 back to my local indy to het my oil service light reset, even they were impressed that I had found the fault and fixed it.

But then again, I was only able to do so because I found the info about the unit duff battery that another owner had posted up.

Power to the People.

Must be a design fault though it water/dampness can get in and damage the pcb seven years after production.

 
It does say "Made in Italy" on it... Having owned a number of Alfa Romeos, I can't say I'm surprised :) - Thanks again!

 
By the way, ref the comment earlier in the post about 2 presses of the key deactivates the interior sensors. It also deactivates the tilt sensor so you can park on ferries in rough weather without the alarm going off continually. It's in the driver's manual somewhere near the end.

 
Hope I'm not too late to this topic. I have the same problem and would like to have a go at fixing it, Where is this unit sited and is it easy to remove?

You have to remove the "scuttle panel" plastic cover in the front boot that covers the battery.

The alarm unit is then attached to the bulkhead in front of the battery by a single nut/bolt and a wiring snap connector.

First post here for me and I just wanted to say thank you for the valuable information contained within this thread.

My 2013 Cayman alarm started going off out of the blue last week, literally 3 days after the warranty from Harbour Cars expired. The only way I could find to silence the alarm was to leave the car unlocked!

At first, Harbour were not particularly helpful, pointing out to me several times that whilst it was only 3 days, the warranty had nonetheless expired. They suggested I took the car to be examined and the fault determined, and then we would "go from there". This was a little too open-ended for my liking and in any case, the indy they suggested I contact was not very supportive.

From the info found here in this thread, I firstly removed the faulty alarm from the car in order I could actually lock it. I then bought a used alarm on eBay from an old Audi A4 (£10 +p&P). When fitted, it worked perfectly. Meanwhile, after telling Harbour that I had silenced the alarm by removing it, they contacted me to tell me they had taken an alarm unit off another 981 in their stock and were sending it out to me in the post.

This is now fitted and the A4 unit is in the cupboard, just in case....

Interestingly, both the "Porsche" alarm units were marked made in Italy, the "Audi" alarm was marked made in Hungary. There seems to be some link in these stories to the Italian made units maybe?

Sorry to 'resurrect' this thread. Firstly thanks for the info so far. I have the same issue - started yesterday. Thought about a trickle charger (may get one anyway). My indy hasn't been that helpful ('we don't get many issues with alarms on a 981' - great thanks). But they did fix a new horn a month or so ago? Can someone explain (in simple terms ) any relationship between the horn (I have them both working) and the alarm? May it be related to a new horn fix?

Also am I right in thinking (from what has been written) its worth taking the alarm unit apart to look for corrosion? if so, how easy is this for someone who knows nothing about cars and certainly hasn't got any equipment...?

Any advice for a complete novice would be appreciated (even if it's 'take it to the specialist')

 
Well, I am resurrecting this thread again as the second-hand unit I fitted 2 years ago to replace my faulty original, is now doing what the original was doing.

One beep when locking the car (no doors, glove boxes etc open)

Then after a while, indicators start flashing.

Did take the car out today, noticed the fault when I took the car out of the garage.

Connected my iCarSoft diagnostic box to it, no fault codes initially but when checking "rear module" it stated "siren faulty".

By the time I got home this afternoon and locked the car, it didn't do it.

My research 2 years ago revealed that the siren's own battery could be faulty. But when I opened mine the PCB was corroded.

As the car has not done many miles recently, am wondering whether the siren battery is failing.

Anyway, have put the car battery on trickle charge.

I did find that Design 911 sold new replacements two years ago for £142, now £188.

 
Second hand eBay replacement siren unit for £17.50 has fixed the problem.

Lets see how long this one lasts.

 
By the way, the 2nd hand unit I fitted also didn't work. I ended up buying a new unit from the local dealer (IIRC ~£130). The parts guy I spoke to said the part had changed a couple of times since my car had been built, and the part he supplied looked a bit different to the original and the faulty 2nd hand unit.

I can't speak for it's longevity as I have sold the car now... Waiting for a new one!

 
Hi new to this thread.

I have a 981 and just had recall done. My OPC did a health check in which it found "Rear alarm siren inop". Reading through this thread it looks like it was the from siren - does anyone know what and where the rear siren is?

NIck, not sure I know what they mean by "rear alarm siren".

The siren unit I have had to replace twice, 1st the original then replace the replacement, is under the bonnet.

Remove the scuttle plastic cover and it is bolted to the bulkhead, in front of the battery beside the tyre inflator compressor.

The unit part number is 1K8951605B but I have used a 1K8951605A and it worked fine.
