968 gearbox replace or repair???

Hi guys
looking at an 968 but it has a gearbox/diff whine does anyone have any info/prices on replacing the box or repairing it

Yes, it's normally the pinion bearing, can be quite common on the 968

Check out www.968uk.com for lots of info.

Its about £800 - £ 1000 for this work, Jaz in Wembly are masters at this, give them a call !

just make sure it is not rear wheel bearings first - do this by going along at say 50 and swerving about a bit to generate some sideways G. if the noise rises and falls as you swerve then it is one of the wheel bearings.

Nb on different occasions had pinion bearings and rear wheel bearings go on my car in 4 years of ownership - so have become a reluctant expert!

ps if it is the box, repair is really the only option, new ones are silly prices and a 2nd hand one might harbour problems.

Hi, My 968 has been to JAZ and had the diff side bearings replaced, with the box in situ. They said they checked the pinion bearing at the time, but now 5000miles down the road the whine has returned. JAZ now say that the whole gearbox requires overhaul at a cost of about £1500. I live in East Anglia, is there anywhere in this area that can be recommended?

have you had a look in trading post(the yellow bit) don't know if there is anyone but worth a try, also pay a visit to a club night in your area and ask the regulars.

Hi - had mine rebuilt last year (late) by Mike Bainbridge in Kendal - top, top chap. Worth thinking about doing the clutch at the same time, and if you're interested in a limited slip diff that would be the time to do it.

I priced gearboxes at the time and the second hand ones that I saw started at £500 - then if you wanted to make sure you didn't have the same problem (typically pinion bearings) you'd need to have the work done anyway.

With mine it was both the diff ("Fraser, second worst one I've ever seen") and the pinion bearing.

atb, and good luck

Fraser.

Thanks for the advice. I do wonder what is it that makes these gearboxes so different from other makes. Why can't a regular transmission specialist like MJS here in Ipswich, not be able to replace a gearbox bearing? They managed to repair my MGC rear axle a few years ago when those parts were really rare. Is there something I've missed along the line somewhere?

I'd say repair what you have as you the better the devil you know. If you buy 2nd hand then you don't know what you might be letting yourself into - potentially a far worse and expensive problem. I'm not so sure our gearboxes are treated any differently than any others. My experience is that gearbox rebuilders do tend to stick mainly to particular brands e.g. Ford boxes, Vauxaull boxes as a degree of familiaraity and the requirement for specialist tools means that having a chap who can rebuild any old box in a one-stop gearbox shop is not really feasible. I'd much prefer to be taking my gearbox from any car I had to a specialist. The best bet would be to find somewhere that does exchange units rather than having your car out of action for however long it takes them to rebuild the box.

Hi Fraser.
I have decided to follow you to Mike Bainbridge, but as its so far from me (300 miles) I'm thinking of sending him the gearbox. Do you or anyone else, know what one of these gearboxes weigh, so I can get a shipping cost? Which delivery company would be best, any ideas?
Many thanks
Regards
John

If I remember correctly John the whole shooting match was about 100 kilos - I can check if I can find the relevant paperwork. I'll also check on the shipping company I used - you'll need to phone them as their online service stops at about 50kg.

If anyone else is sure of a number (weight), chip in. Delivery each way for me was in the order of £50.

I was put in touch with Mr Bainbridge by PJS here - Mike took loads of pictures before, during and after, so you'll have lots of stuff to stick in your service folder.

ps - if you want to discuss let me know and I'll get my phone number to you.

I don't think there is anything special about these boxes that would prevent most engineering shops from rebuilding them. When I had mine done I was originally quoted £3-400. I got a call however after I dropped my box off to say the price of the parts was very dear and the price would be about £6-700 all in, which it was.

This was at Precision Engine Services in Inverness who are very good. But Istill reckon there is nothing sinister to stop any reputable engineering shop from rebuilding these.

In fact are these boxes not just VAG units with diferent ratios?

Possibly because they are in a Porsche and may or may not be subject to a bit more abuse than say an Audi 80 or whatever, you would want the tolerances and clearances adhered to a bit more stringently.

Thanks Mark. The chap who does all my other servicing is taking the 'box out and taking a look inside. He's done the bearings on 944 'boxes before, so I'm hoping with a little research he will be able to do mine as well. Watch this space.....
John.

Well, my regular servicing guy decided that 968 gearboxes were a step too far, so after some research, I decided to send the gearbox to Midland Automatic Transmissions at Kettering. They assured me that they had done these 'boxes before, and true to their word they replaced all the bearings and set it all up in under a week. They are such lovely people to deal with, and keep in contact on progress. The overhaul was £1200 including the dreaded VAT and a 12 month warranty, and the 'box operates smoothly and most importantly, silently. Paul is the man to talk to.

sounds like a good result, glad you got it fixed, ready for the glorious summer that I am sure is on it's way [;)]
