968 cup mirror alternative

wayne1

New member
I quite fancy a pair of 968 cup mirrors but the price they demand is, I feel extortionate, so I got to thinking are there similar cheaper alternatives that may fit the 944. I have looked at Mazda MX5 Mk 2 models, which appear to have a similar shape. Has anyone else considered these as an alternative?

wayne,
I know what you mean, but I think an idea like that will finish up where you think the teardrops are good value
there are better ways to save cost
good luck if you do it

That's funny because that was the model I identified as having the most similar profile to cup mirrors but assumed the bases would need quite a lot of work and didn't get any further.

Apart from the original ones, that you can see a lot more in and are less likely to be levered off the car in the middle of the night! [8|]

i've had both, and the square ones are a lot better. They don't look so beautiful, but personally I'd prefer not to lie awake all night wondering if I could hear my teardrops being listed on e-bay. [&o]

Yes I have, only the day before yesterday. I have an NB MX=5 and I wondered how easily they could be adapted. Some people use new Mini mirrors too - both a better than Cup mirrors, which look nice but are close to useless.

You must admit these do look similar

Go for a poverty spec and theyre manually adjusted, which would be far better. Those mirrors will have come from an early Mk2 1.8iS.

Theyre lighter and the electrically adjusted mirrors off the iS will need adapting to the Porsches wiring loom, if the functions are similar.

Nothing is close to a Porsche door mounting, so every alternative is fabricated from scratch! In fact, virtually all Cup mirrors sold (are stolen, but thats a separate matter) are from 911s and require new bases to fit 944/968s

Where people have fitted Mini mirrors and similar they have welded up the doors and re-mounted the original bases.

Although the cup mirrors look superb, the range of 'rear vision' is greatly reduced compared to the square mirrors.
The standard mirror glass is flat, causing the main part of the problem, but curved glasses are very expensive to buy.
Each will have their own thoughts but I preferred the square mirrors on my 944s as they matched the general shape of the car.

A few years ago one of the parts dealers was experimenting to make a Cup Mirror mould that slipped on over the standard 944 Flag mirrors so you could have the best of both worlds. Needless to say it looked pants [:'(]

On that note these are also available.

Would be interesting to know how they look.

Back in the 80's many used to change them with Opel Manta mirrors. I think they look real good but personally i'm inclined to keeping it all porsche. They can still be bought today, mirrors
