964 luggage compartment light

The rectangular luggage compartment light located underneath the front bonnet has stopped working. Has anyone successfully taken this out without scratching the surrounding metal?
My late 1989 3.2 Carrera has a few 964 parts, the luggage compartment light being one of them, so the user manual covers the earlier light but not the one installed in my car.
