964 - everyday porsche?

Hi there,

I'm doing some research into buying my first Porsche when I get back from working in Dubai. My budget is relatively low at 11-12K and I had been looking at either an immaculate SC or an early 3.2. However trawling though the classifieds reveals that early 964's are not that much more. 13-14K appears to buy a usable car in a private sale.

As the title of this thread suggests I'm looking to buy a car for use as everyday trandport. Is this realistic with a 964? My ideal machine would be a Carrera 2 coupe in silver with the 'must have' FSH and loads of bills to back this up. Obviously I'd be prepared to compromise on this spec but the car must be a Carrera 2 and it must be RHD.

I'm heard all about dual mass flywheels and leaky engines. Putting these well known issues to one side for a minute, what else should I be looking out for? I've heard that 964's had lots of complicated electronics and these can be very expensive to replace in they go wrong.

What about suspension? Are there any well known issues I should be aware of?

Any and all advice appreciated.

All the best.

Martin.

Like the other guys who have responded, I drive mine every day (C2 Targa).

Mine is one of the last made so has no oil leak issues and is bullet proof.

In the entire time I've had her the only things that have gone wrong is a connector on the warning light system vibrated loose (very expensive to fix - cost me £0 [:D]) and the front offside wheel bearing was replaced because it started to make a slight noise (the garage told me that I was being paranoid - but I get it replaced anyway - I have a mate who works for BSL so that cost £25 + two hours labour)

So if you ignore my new points I cna confirm that the whole owning experiance has been great [:)]

I would concur.

My 1991 964 Tip is my practical car (my MG Midget is my fun car). It has done 12-15k miles a year in my ownership with no real problem (as have the last three Porsches I have owned). Mine is 14 years old, so has the occasional problem, but nothing serious. The biggest repair bill I have had is about £200.

Having said that, the 964 was a very expensive supercar back when it was new, so don't expect it to be cheap to run. It is probably the most expensive 911 to service, and the tyres, although not now high-tech, are a notable expence. However, look at how little you will loose in depreciation, and you will see just how much of a bargain the 964 is.
