944S2 Track Car Project - Spa April 2019

Fantastic pictures ! We are off are off to Germany early July for a fortnight and I have toyed with taking the car round the circuit (especially as it spent quite a bit of time there with its previous owner). Not sure if its a good idea wouldnt want a mishap that would put a kybosh on the rest of the holiday us unclear on what the insurance situation is ?

Insurance situation is pretty clear....don't do it...

Hire a swift from rent4ring for a few laps though. I'm doing that in august.

It's back on the road... (and the track)

Was a very cold day at Cadwell (Sun 21st Jan) & I bailed out soon after lunch. By then the track was covered with a layer of slush & it was getting a bit too much.

I've now dropped it off at the bodyshop for a few small areas of rust to be dealt with.

I've had quite a lot of work done..

New clutch (yes this is a pic of the old one)

Rear axle refub - new spring plates & bushes, new solid mounts, new trailing arm bushes

New fuel lines (no pics, but these were fabricated for me & re-used the old ends.)

The clutch failed at the ring in April 2017 (I always pick such glamorous places to break down..) I was having a fair bit of brake judder - a bit odd, not had it before, but this was with new PF 08 pads & new Sebro disks. We decided to keep going but ease off on the brakes a bit, use a bit more engine braking. This was obviously too much for the old rubber centred clutch & it finally failed on the approach to the Carousel. We got towed off the circuit & managed to crawl back to the hotel in 1st.

Fortunately my breakdown cover agreed to ship the car back & flew us back home. The car arrived a couple of weeks later. I've not been well, so wasn't in a position to fix it myself, & managed to persuade a friend who runs a local garage to take it on. I decided to get a few "while you're in there" jobs done.

Cadwell was my first trip out since the failure. I put some old brake disks back on, kept the new pads, & still had some judder when hot (wasn't braking too hard early on as the track was pretty slipepry). Next step is to refit some old part-worn PF08 pads.

Here's another pic - just because I like this one..

You have been busy! Did the rear axle refresh make a noticeable difference?

cheers

Confirmation bias says yes... [:D]

I suspect it feels a bit more connected and direct, although I hadn't driven it for nine months. Anything that gives me more warning of the back end stepping out is good. It can be quite twitchy on the exit of slow corners in the wet, pretty benign on faster stuff. I had a few "moments" at Cadwell but nothing to worry about & caught them OK.

The noise is greater, but not unbearable for a track car. Seems to have settled down a bit after the first few miles or maybe I'm used to it now.

Here's the start of the work on some of the rusty bits..

I think the clutch master cylinder might be failing though...not a massive job & probably worth changing the slave at the same time

Oh yes - no brake judder this time. New discs & careful cleaning of the hubs seemed to work. I re-used some half worn pads & everything was fine

EDH, where did you purchase the solid upper rear beam mount(red mount)

Cheers in advance

Both solid mounts from racers edge IIRC. spring plates & bushes from partworks.de

Another trip out - this time an evening at Donington - was very warm last night

Car went well, but the oil (semi 10w40) couldn't cope, eventually dropping to ~3bar under load after 20 mins or so. Everything else was OK, not much in the way of front pads left by the end though. Still very impressed by AD08 tyres. Hot summer trackdays are going to need a synth 10w50 or 10w60 I think.

Pure self-indulgence, but just fitted these.. [link=http://gtpheadlights.com/index.html]http://gtpheadlights.com/index.html[/link]

A bit fiddly, and definitely longer than an hour to fit (as the vendor claims). Anyway, they are very well made & fit well once you work out what's intended.

Nice but expensive, I wonder if that's where D9 sourced them from? I liked the ones D9 sold that looked like BMW 8 series pop ups, opened less and had 2 round lights per side.

These are much better than the D9 lights - I read nothing but bad stories about the D9 fit and finish.

Earlier this month I spent a couple of days trying to wrestle some cheap fibreglass buckets into decent shape but gave up on that idea. I managed to form the light covers ok but couldn't get a good fit with the buckets. They really needed chopping and re-shaping & I decided to cut my losses.

I think D9 were mainly resellers of parts sourced in Europe, those parts were usually good quality. What they made themselves not so much. How much weight does the new setup save?

No idea on weight - I have read ~10kg, but that wasn't really a consideration.

The D9 products were fibreglass buckets & you had to do some faffing around to fit them. These ones use the standard mounting holes & some simple brackets. (Access to the back of the mounting holes is a bit awkward - wheel arch liner needs to come off on the o/s and the alternator air pipe gets in the way on the n/s)

Latest outing, and the final one at Rockingham

A tad slippery early on - what's wrong with this picture?

Not exactly what you want to see as you're exiting a banked turn at a fair rate of knots.. Fortunately he continued his spin through 360 degrees, finished pointing the right way and proceeded on round the circuit..

More usual pics..
