944S Fuel light

Are fuel warning lights on these cars usually reliable? I haven't dared to go low enough on fuel to see yet so wonder what people's experiences are generally. If and when it comes on what sort of reserve is there?

Can only comment on my own car, mine is often run down to the orange light coming on with no problems. The reserve (on my S2 at least) is 8 litres, good enough for 30 miles or so...

I've had 3 944's now and always found the light pretty reliable. On my turbo it seems from the gauge that there's really no fuel left but last time the light came on there was still about 13 litres left in. Keep your bottle and see when yours kicks in - take a jerry can with you to calm the nerves [:)]

Is there a low fuel light then??

11 years and I have never seen it, I know my gauge does not work that well (which could be why) even when she is filled to the brim the gauge never actually reads full.

The thing is when the ignition is turned to position 1 and the dash lights are on there is no low fuel warning light, so is there one and my bulb has blown?

Could be. I can't remember for sure whether the low fuel light does come on at position 1 but I think it does ...

I've never run my S2 to empty but the light certainly works and I tend to wait for it to come on before filling the old girl up. However, given that the fuel tank capacity is 80 litres (I think) and I rarely put more than about 65 litres of fuel in it I'd suggest it comes on when there is around 15 litres left in the tank.

yupp agree with many - i smile when my light comes on in the know i got about 30-40 miles left - and sometimes i can run 3 days before i fill up always working out how many miles ago it lid up .... i say if working they are reliable...... thats on 2 944 i had

The fuel light should be lit, when ur all the rest off your dash lights are on. Check this 1st as u may have a blown bulb.
I use my fuel light often 2 work out mpg, and I get pretty content readings. Can flicker on and off 4 a mile or so. Must be more accurte then the gague.

I'm sure it 8ltrs in the reseve

Thanks Edd and to all for such quick and helpfull responses. This is such a good forum! Will let you know if I have the nerve to trust it. Don't think it comes on with other lights at start up though.

Just checked this, fuel reserve light does not come on during ignition on, although battery and low oil pressure lights do.

Edd

Both our 924's have the warning which works reliably-at least 2 gallons left at that point--ie 60 careful miles, but never tested that to empty to avoid detritus being sucked up-confirm it doesn't come on with other warning lights-only when fuel is that low.

Just checked mine, light don't come on ethir. So clearly part off the design. Seems strange that it wouldn't be part off the bulb check.

Nice one thanks Edd, that is good news then so I never actually get to the bottom of the tank!
I prefer not to see the fuel warning light although something I am getting used too with the M3 [:D][:D]

IME the light comes on pretty much when the needle reaches the end of its travel, it then stays there whilst the reserve light remains illuminated.

Edd

I started a thread a good while back, Petrol Light Chicken. Can't be bothered looking it up but I got 50 miles with the light on before I bottled it!

I had my car months before I ever saw the yellow light, the needle will hit the bottom completely before it comes on. I think the reserve is 8 litres but I reckon I have at least 10-12 litres when it comes on!

Isn't the outlet in the bottom of the tank anyway?
Tony

Never had one cut open-only use the 60 mile figure as tankfull to tankfull-I can never get more than 10 liters less than stated capacity-I think fuel pick up is above the tank bottom in a well to avoid rubbish being sucked up.

Thanks Tony. I am still letting mine creep down 'so I can see the light.' ...but then I will pull in at the next service station just in case!

Well its finally come on ...... so I filled up immediately! Didn't have the guts to see if it would do another 50/60 miles. Nice big orange light. [:)]
I guess its all a matter of confidence and time with a different car. Thanks all for your help.

How many litres did you fill up with Martin? it will give you a gauge (if you pardon the pun![:D]) of how accurate your fuel light is. Mine came on today and after a few miles of driving managed to get 68 litres in so reasonable safety margin (that's if my memory serves me right and the tanks are 80 litres on S2 and turbo?)

I put about 45 litres in Andy which I reckoned to be about 10 of Her Majesy's finest gallons. So like you I will check to see mpg when the light comes on next. Think it does about 30. Its all good fun this!
