944's and snow

Hi All,

Well my 944 Cab normally lives under a cover during the bad winter spell's and I drive another car. However this year the other car is no more and so the Cab is seeing a bit of the winter stuff. Now normally I don't mind driving in wet and rainy conditions, but I've never had the Cab out in the snow, so my question is;

How well do 944's like the snow? or slippery conditions?

I previously had a 4ltr S Type rear wheel drive and it was all over the place as soon as there was snow on the ground, so I was just wondering if those of you that are daily drivers in these rear wheel, weight balanced machines, how well do they handle?

It is hard to generalise as a huge factor will be the tyres you have fitted. Even looking at something as mundane as my daily-drive VW Golf I can tell you that it was near suicidal on Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3s (summer tyres) , OK-ish on Bridgestone Turanza ER300s (summer tyres) and superb on Bridgestone Blizzak LM25 (m+s marked winter tyres). Tread pattern makes an enormous difference.
 
Personally I wouldn't recommend driving in the snow if at all avoidable, even if you fit winter tyres or chains/snow socks you cant account for all the other idiots who will likely lose control and crash into you. But if you must you must, the 944 isn't particularly bad in the snow, but I would strongly recommend winter tyres at the very least before making regular trips on white stuff.

Mine stays away from snow. Utterly useless. Took me 30 mins to get onto the drive once - yes its uphill but not much and I'd crept my way home that night and was feeling quite pleased with myself only to be stuck and embarrassed stranded across my own threshold!
 
Can't comment on the cab aspect, but my wife has a z3 with the single layer roof. It is colder- but the heater works well so I'd dub it "fresh".

As for the 944 itself - i drive a 924S as a daily- as I mentioned one of my patients this morning following "this must be bloody awful to drive now?"- no it isn't.
1. Its on Conti winter contact winter tyres- I run them from Nov until April as I often go to the Alps and water/rain capability is great, and no, they do not desintegrate the moments they are above 7 degrees celcius. There is however a bit more tyre rumble (2 db) and the car is slightly "wallowyer" but you adapt quickly
2. 50:50 weight distribution
3. You can steer it on the throttle- its is fantastically controllable
4. it has plenty of torque so you can use that instead of using power to wheelspin
5. ground clearance is pretty good- its a bit of a giraffe!

Hi All,

Many thanks for the comments, I'll try and make sure I don't go out in too much white stuff as I only have the summer tyres, although they have plenty of tread. I also live on a hill and have a steep drive, I normally gauge how bad the roads are once the traffic outside the house can't drive up the hill. If anybody knows Station Road in Waddington then they'll know what I mean, although I can imagine there are many similar places. Also a small apology as I did look through the forum the other night and totally missed the other thread about lsd cars and snow, maybe a touch of snow blindness.

By the way the heating in the Cab is very good, I don't know how good aZ3 is but even in this cold weather its blowing hot within a few minutes of driving
