944S 8v - Is this right?

Looking to the font of all knowledge for the answer to this.

Is there a 944S with the 8v engine? I have been offered one as PX against my cab and all the reading and web searching I have done says 'the introduction of the 944S saw the new 16v 190bhp engine.....'. The one on offer is an E registered 8v.

Can anyone tell me anything about it?

Your information is correct; the 'S' has a 16v engine, the other (Lux) does not. If it's an 8V engine then it's not an 'S', if it's a 16v engine then it is.
 
Just done an insurance check on the car using the reg number and it is listed as a 944 S, could it be the engine has been swapped? Are there any features that destinguish the S from the Lux other than an extra 8 valves?
 
Perhaps it is an 'S' then - if it's an 'E' reg it most likely will be an 'S'. Other than the 16v head and optional '16 Ventiler" scripts on the rubbing strips I'm not aware of any other differences.

Who as actually told you it's an 8v? I bet it is a 16v.
 
Rev counter red-lined at 6,800 RPM is the only internal difference that I can think of.

A look under the bonnet will definately reveal the difference between the 8v and 16v engines !!
 
The seller brought the car to me when he viewed the cab, it was only when he popped the bonnet that I realised that there was an 8v head on the engine, hence the questions. After being on the phone to the seller this evening he has just checked the engine number against the V5 and they do not match. The car itself appears to be an 'S' having the 6800rpm red line, 944S badging, 16 vent... rubbing strips, it just looks like someone has just put an 8v engine in it at some point.

Anyway I am not taking this one in PX as the history is unknown so will either keep it for a while longer or look to sell again.

To be fair, many cars will be badged wrongly after 20 years. Mine came with a "turbo" badge on the left-hand rear, and the insurers required it to be removed immediately as it made the car more of a theft risk. Lux bodywork was a bit of a giveaway but I'd guess that a few "s"s have had engine failures and had an 8v lump fitted, and a few Luxes will have had an "s" added.

Imagine the BMW forums? How many dodgy "M" badges have been fitted, and how many "M" cars have the engines replaced with a 1.8?
 
Not an 924S is it. The original 924's had a 2.0 audi engine afaik. The 924S has the 2.58v same engine found in the 944 Lux 8v.

albeit a slightly de-tuned version so as not to compete with the 44 lux
 
..until 1988, when the 924S and 944Lux shared the same 160 Bhp engine.

Speaking of cross breeds, Porsche looked at equipping the 924S with the late, eliptical dashboard, and a 2.7 L 8V engine in 1989. They built around 10 prototypes, six of which are still running around in private hands in Austria & Germany.
